Hours later, quiet rustling and soft humming stirred Julian from his slumber.

He cracked an eye open then grinned upon spying Blaire setting out his breakfast. Today she wore a simple cream-colored gown trimmed in lavender and green. Once again, a feeling of contentment settled on him. As if this was the most normal thing in the world, for her to prepare his breakfast.

The shutters had been thrown wide and the window opened a fraction to let in the refreshing spring air. Outside, birds chirped and called to one another, and somewhere nearby cattle lowed, and sheep baaed. Boisterous male voices carried to him, and a stab of envy speared his ribs.

Those people knew who they were. Their lives hadn’t suddenly ground to a halt.

“Good morning, Miss Culpepper.”

He maneuvered into a sitting position. Scraping his hair off his forehead, being careful not to touch the painful bump there, he crossed his ankles beneath the bedcoverings.

She glanced up from arranging the table, and a radiant smile blossomed across her face.

“Good morning to you too, Lieutenant.” She tilted her head in the endearing way he’d come to know. “Feeling more yourself today?”

“I am. I remembered my name.”

Her pups’ ears perked up the minute they heard him speak, and the dogs promptly scrambled onto the bed. He ruffled the soft fur atop their dappled heads and indulged in watching Blaire putter about.

“You shouldn’t let them on the bed. They’ll think they’re always allowed such privileges, and I fear they are going to be much larger dogs than I first thought.” She stood back and admired her handiwork then adjusted a glass. She waved her hand at the dogs. “You helped me rescue them, but I don’t suppose you remember that.”

A flash of a bookstore whisked through his mind. Then, in rapid succession, the faces of a trio of sneering youths, a confused maid holding meat pies, and an argument with Daphne. He’d had more of these instances the past two days, which he hoped meant his memory was beginning to return.

He’d not said anything to anyone yet, not even Dr. Durnham.

A peculiar sense of foreboding made him wary. Mayhap that was his soldier’s instinct.

“Your breakfast is ready.” She shooed her playful pups off the bed. “Stay down, boys. Lieutenant Drake doesn’t need the two of you bouncing about whilst he is recovering.”

Yes, he reminded himself again. He was Lieutenant Julian Drake. Formerly of His Majesty’s army and now landed gentry, a gentleman farmer, and owner of Montclere. His father had died, as had his elder brother in an accident of some sort, but his mother and sisters were alive.

“I thought you might be tired of staying abed, and yesterday I asked Dr. Durnham if you mightn’t eat your breakfast at the table this morning.” She flicked her fingers towards the sausages and eggs.

Julian sniffed, and his stomach growled. “I’m famished.”

“It’s no wonder. You mostly slept the first couple of days, not eating enough to keep an ant alive.”

She pointed to a lumpy pile topped by a folded towel.
