Isaac waited until she stepped inside before he turned away. He had wandered aimlessly through the streets, asking himself what he could do for his friend. The wealthy district of Old Sienna was quiet. It had been so because most of the residents attended the governor’s mansion. The breeze was soft and the stars of the Caribbean watched him from their places.

In the silence of the night Isaac felt like what he had become a sad soul condemned to oblivion. Any hope he had of tasting love on Olivia’s lips vanished when her eyes found Juan Carlos Trinidad at the governor’s mansion. He knew without knowing by the way she looked at the artista with a gaze she had never given Isaac in all the years of their friendship.

He needed his mother then, as he never had before. He needed her presence and her embrace. Perhaps she would have provided him with perspective had God not picked the flower that was Maricela Quintero-Aquino from the garden of Rolando’s heart. Isaac had finally arrived at that inevitable moment in a young man’s life when only a mother’s love can heal the wound of his first heartbreak.

The streets were dark. He was barely visible in his black suit with his black fedora like a shadow among shadows, a freshly minted phantom of unrequited love. He arrived at the corner of Avenida Dos and Calle Santa Ana where a mysterious stranger stood beneath the light post across the street. It was the same mysterious figure he saw the night before, and also in his dream. The stranger leaned against the pole with a hand in his pocket. He wore a long coat and wide brim hat. He brought a cigarette up to his lips, the orange glow reflected in the black marbles of his eyes as he stared at Isaac in silence.

Isaac stood motionless for a moment. His eyes darted back and forth before he decided to cross the street and approach the stranger. When he arrived beneath the light post he looked up at the man. He was much taller than he appeared from a distance. The stranger’s face remained hidden under the shadow cast by his fedora. He offered Isaac a cigarette, but Isaac declined.

“You look as if you have just come from a funeral,” said the man.

“Perhaps it was my own,” Isaac shrugged.

“Heartbreak has a way of making us feel that way.” The man stuffed the box of cigarettes back into his pocket.

Isaac cast the stranger a suspicious glance. “Who are you?”

“You have already asked me that question.”

“A question you never answered,” Isaac remembered his dream.

“You already know the answer,” the stranger turned and walked away.

“I want to hear it from you,” Isaac insisted.

“My name is Armando de Maria y Delores-Dios, at your service,” he said over his shoulder and tipping his hat.

“But I thought you were—”

“Do you wish to waste time discussing what you already know, or would you prefer to find out why I’m here?” Armando cut him off.
