CHAPTER ELEVEN

“Cammy, why did you run off?” Willow asked as she and their aunt led her upstairs to one of the bedchambers that had been readied for her. The room, a mix of peach and pale blue silks, and dark, polished furniture, was surprisingly elegant but in a cozy and charming way.

Her tension eased despite the questions Willow and Charlotte were tossing at her. She and her sisters had been raised to marry for love. Of course, a man’s wealth did play a part, but only a small part. Intelligence, kindness, faithfulness, willingness to protect those he loved, were just as important, if not more so.

But she was pleased that Willow had found herself a man with all these qualities and a surprising bit of wealth.

Lorcan had mentioned he and his brothers shared in their investments. Did it mean he was just as wealthy as Shayne? She set aside the thought, for all the wealth in the world would not sway her to marry a man she did not love.

Of course, she loved Lorcan.

But she was not ready to say it to him yet.

“Give me a moment to wash up, and I will tell you everything.”

Charlotte groaned, no doubt worried all these nights alone with Lorcan had led to something irreversible. But in this, Lorcan had been surprisingly gallant and refused to claim her outside of marriage.

Had he made advances, she would not have resisted, for the man was devastatingly appealing. But it spoke well of his character that he had not attempted any such thing. He was a protector, even if it meant protecting her against himself.

It felt odd not to share a bedchamber with him.

She tried not to think of it and ignored the pang of regret now squeezing her heart. Perhaps...no, he would not sneak a visit in the middle of the night, certainly not under his brother’s watchful eye. But she wondered where they had settled him. There were at least five or six bedchambers that she had counted along the hallway and probably more in the opposite wing.

If it were up to Charlotte, she would have had him placed in the barn, as far away from her as possible.

Not that it would stop him if he wanted to see her.

Willow must have been reading her thoughts. “Shayne has plenty of rooms in this big house. His first task after acquiring the place was to set aside two of the larger bedchambers for his brothers. They are a close family, just as we are. He wanted them to treat his home as though it were their own, to have a place to leave their belongings, and come and go as they pleased.

“That is generous of him.”

“After their parents died, he wanted to make sure he and his brothers would never drift apart. As eldest, he felt it was his duty to hold the family together.”

Cammy nodded. “He seems to have done that rather well.”

“I think so, too. I admire him for it, especially since they are all strong and independent.
