CHAPTER FOURTEEN
A few hours later, I headed out. I got to the store quickly, and sure enough, Heath had just what I was looking for in Gretchenâs healthy-food section. My brother made a face when he saw me and asked, âWhat are you doing up at this hour? Trying to impress a movie star?â
My family had always been the best at seeing right through me. Technically, I was using the waffles to have a hard discussion, but did I want to impress Nick? Yes. âItâs none of your business, and seriously, you should go to a sleep clinic.â
I told him to put it on my account as he sputtered something about sleeping just fine, and I headed back to my car.
On the drive home I tried to think of what exactly to say to Nick but couldnât seem to find the right words. I decided I would figure it out when I saw him.
Bad plan.
Because as I was in the midst of making the waffle batter, Nick walked into the kitchen, looking as if heâd just rolled out of bed. His hair was artfully ruffled, his eyes sleepy, and once again, he didnât have a shirt on.
âGood morning, Jane. Whatâs all this?â he asked.
âIâm, uh, making waffles.â I forced myself to look back at the batter and stir it with the whisk so that I wouldnât make either one of us uncomfortable by openly ogling him.
But he didnât help me in this regard. Oh no, he had to go and make things worse. He came over to the counter, leaning his hip against it. If I shifted sideways just slightly, I would have been able to brush my arm against his bare chest.
While I was contemplating whether this was the best course of action, he asked, âWhat can I do to help?â
âYou could get chest.â I immediately realized my mistake. âDressed! I meant dressed. You could get dressed.â
He gave me a playful smile and started to walk out of the room backward. âAre you sure you want me to do that?â
No. âYes.â
âOkay,â he said, drawing out the A like he didnât believe what Iâd just said.
He shouldnât have, but that was beside the point.
As soon as he was gone, I grabbed my phone and texted Gretchen. I needed to tell somebody what had just happened.
Heâs shirtless. Again. Am powerless to resist.
Good for him. He did warn you that he wasnât interested in fighting fair.
If that was his strategy, it was a good one.
What does he have against shirts?
She sent me a shrugging emoji and then replied:
Maybe one spontaneously combusted after he put it on and heâs been worried about it happening again. I guess youâll just have to get Zeus to it.
It is too early for puns, I told her.
Itâs never too early for that. Call me when you finish your conversation.
Nick came back in the kitchen, wearing all of his clothes, and I considered that kind of a win. It would be too hard to have a serious conversation if I was lost in his pecs.
