Chapter 31

Desert land. Secret passage. Traps.

Z irizz carefully led us somewhere away from the anthill, and soon we moved away from it a decent distance. Space around was empty, and only in some places on the ground lay small pebbles, interspersed with fragments of limestone. It was somehow too quiet here.

Soon we turned again and headed toward the wall of the cave. It took a long walk, although it seemed that the wall was pretty close. There were no ants in these places, which was explained by the mosquito as if nobody would have come here anyway. A strange explanation, but I did not succeed in achieving a more intelligible answer.

The wall turned out to be impressively high. Large stones gnawed into the rock along with many small ones, or maybe, on the contrary, they tried to get into free space. I felt moisture and cold touching the stones. And I had one question in my mind - why did we come here?

“Do you think that we came here in vain?” the mosquito looked at us questioningly. “Then you are mistaken.”

He walked a few steps to the left of me and poked his proboscis into an inconspicuous pebble similar to many others. Nothing happened and the magician squinted his eyes and stared at the free wanderer.

However, sometime later there was some kind of click, then another one and another. At some point, a large stone moved off to the side, revealing a dark passage into an unknown dungeon.

Zirizz waved his paw and disappeared into the aisle, and our squad followed him. As soon as we entered, the stone behind our backs fell to its former place. In the deep darkness of a small passage, Zel Nor emitted a dim glow that barely protected from almost impenetrable darkness.

My vision allowed me to see a lot, but even here it was almost useless. The elf did not feel any discomfort, but now her eyes shone with an emerald light, and the pupil became wide. The mage hit the wall several times and then spat. Cursing, he activated the light, immediately illuminating the space around, breaking the shroud of darkness.

“That’s better," the knight nodded.

“...” Berry patted the wizard on the shoulder.

“Don’t even mention that,” the mage grinned. “I don’t understand why I didn’t do it right away.”

“It has become better, but still scary,” Alyona came closer to me. “We ought to get out of here quickly.”

“Where did you get the information about this passage?” I asked the flying warrior.

“I told you that Vespan Luktuor had told me everything,” Zirizz answered with irritation.

“How did he know?”

“Why should I know?!” the mosquito was annoyed by such inquiries, but all this seemed too suspicious.

“Better be ready, there are traps here,” Zirizz warned. “Try not to die, there are few of them, but you can’t avoid all of them.”

“What should we do then?” I asked.

“Do this!” answered the mosquito and deftly jumped somewhere forward, after which he hung in the air, making a slight buzz.
