They were still ten meters out when Branna turned in time to see Julia take a hard blow from Captain Moore and go down. “Julia!” Branna shouted and grabbed at the oars again, pulling for all she was worth. Something tore in her gut, sending streaking pain through her middle. She ignored it as they continued to race to shore.

When she checked again, Moore lay unmoving in the sand and Julia and Bridget crashed blindly into the trees while Captain Shaw stalked up the beach and disappeared into the jungle after them. “Fucking bastard!”

The boat ground to a stop in the sand and Nat, Gus, and Branna jumped out and pushed the boat back into deeper water against the crashing waves. “Get back to the ship and bring more men,” Branna ordered Jack. She couldn’t count on help anytime soon. It took four of them to make it to the beach in the stormy water. Jack on his own may not make it at all.

“Aye, aye, Captain.” Jack heaved on the oars, the boat shooting straight up and over the next swell before settling back down in the trough.

“Did you see where they went?” Gus asked as he studied the tree line.

“Aye,” Branna said through her clenched jaw. She took a step up the beach and spun at an inhuman bellow of rage from their left.

“Oh, hell. Him,” Gus muttered. Angus was charging down the beach like a raging bull, sword drawn.

Nat drew his sword. “Go, Captain. We’ll take care of this.”

Nat and Gus stood shoulder to shoulder, and Gus grinned. “We’ll catch you up when we’re through. It shouldn’t be long.”

Branna didn’t wait to see what happened next and charged through the trees where she had seen Julia go in.
