Dusty could tell Serena was out of ideas. She had hoped that rescuing Sam would help him out, but ultimately, Sam would have to flee to remain safe instead of helping Dusty get his ship back in the air and out of port. He knew that going into this, yet he wanted to help them. Perez was correct; it was the right thing to do. It wasn’t politics; it was justice. He’d forgotten they were different.

He knew Serena couldn’t come up with an answer. She’d offered all the help she could. Besides that, he’d seen her condition that morning. He knew she was running on fumes. He was surprised the woman still stood at this point. Her hangover had seemed pretty fierce only hours ago. The budding sun of the day would deepen her dehydration once they started their trek up the mountain.

Before he could reassure her with empty words made to make her feel better, a woman spoke up. “Leave that to me and the miners here.” She jerked her soot-splotched chin at the two men near the ladder. “You down by the airship docks?” she asked Dusty.

“Last ship on the right. The junk ship. Named Desert Star.”

She nodded before turning back to José and Chester. “After you two send word back on if you found Sam or not, round up some of the lignite coal Bromwell had you all dump by the mass grave last month.” She turned back to Dusty. “It’s not the best quality coal and produces lower heat, but it will get you to where you’re going. Just make sure you light her up early so it has time to warm up the boiler.”

He nodded. They just had to make it to Tannisport. “Can you pass that on to my crew once they get the load of coal?”

The two miners nodded. Serena dismissed them, and they crawled up the swinging ladder.

“What about the sails? I can fix them.” The woman looked to Serena.

“Bella, I’m already short a person…” Serena began to protest.

Bella placed a dark-brown hand on the tiny waist of her black corset. She tapped her fingers impatiently, cocking her head to the side. A golden glow from the firelight shimmered in the thick, tight braid coiled around the crown of her head. “The captain’s right. If Sam doesn’t have an escape plan after we get him out of Bromwell’s clutches, we are sentencing the man to death.”

Dusty turned to Serena to plead with her. “I’ll take good care of him. Sam can go wherever he likes on Brynn. I’ll drop him off anywhere he wants.” He kept his voice soft. He needed her to know he meant his words. “After I deliver my goods in Tannisport that is,” he added for clarification. “I can take Sam as far of Golden City if he likes.”

“He’s always talked of Golden City.” Esperanza drifted out of the shadows cast by the tall bookshelves, speaking in a voice thick with grief and tears. “Can you take me, too?”

Dusty turned to see Luna standing with Esperanza.
