“I understand the topic is … difficult, to discuss, but I would not have come here and bartered so highly if it weren’t important.” He set a smaller, bright purple jewel, on the table. “Will this be enough?”

She crooked her finger and the bright jewel slid to join the first. With a deep sigh, she nodded once. “Very well.”

We settled in our seats now that we all knew we were staying.

“When I was younger,” she began, “I had five soulmates.”

Five!

“I was stubborn, to say the least,” she said. “Having so many mates was unheard of back then. A few of my mates thought I was lying, but it’s hard to deny the bond for long.”

So many questions burned in my throat, but I held them back, letting her tell her tale.

“I sealed the bond with two of my mates, though it was not purposefully done. We were on a mission and I was injured. They used some of their magic to heal me and the bond solidified. We hadn’t realized what we had done until we returned and the bond was visible to others.” She raised her eyes to mine. “Once you seal it, a golden thread appears, and is visible for three days. There are ancient texts that describe a celebration being held during that time, to commemorate the bond. Our reception was far from happy. My other mates were livid. They thought I had chosen the two only, and didn’t also want them.”

That must have been awful. I could only imagine how heartbreaking that must have been for her when she didn’t even intentionally seal the bonds.

“There was a guild battle between three guilds, I lived in another country during this time, and those guilds often battled. This battle was long, hard, and many died. One of my mates died before we’d sealed the bond, but I still felt it. Felt the bond snap like a piece of my soul had severed completely off.”

Tears sprang to my eyes and Silas set his hand on my knee.

“I … exploded,” she said. “Killed dozens in my rage. When I came to, my guild master kicked me out of the guild and forced me to leave town. My mates left with me, but we were attacked by members of the guild I’d killed. All of them … all of my mates are dead now.”

The silence after those words was almost deafening.

She took a deep breath and looked at me. “How many do you have?”

“I’m not certain,” I admitted. “Possibly four.”

She looked at Silas. “He’s one?”

“We think,” I said softly.

“There’s one way to tell,” she said and looked at Paolo. “Though you may be opposed to it.”

“I’ve heard of the spell and the possible adverse side effects and have advised against it,” he said sternly.

“There’s another way,” she said. “All of the potential mates would need to be in one room, though.”

“What is this other way?” Paolo asked, eyes narrowed in suspicion.

“I can’t discuss it in front of her, or the suspected one.
