But more still is at stake in a few of the images from this series that include yet one more level of superimposition (figure 6.5).

The grid in this image is of a World War I map of Palestine, and of aerial views of Palestinian spaces taken by German war planes during World War I when Palestine was occupied by the British. Ettinger, born in Israel after World War II, has inherited other traces of loss—traces of Palestinian spaces that she maps onto the spaces of Polish streets before World War II.

These competing spaces and temporalities become part of a multilayered psychic grid, unconsciously transmitted, merging geography and history, and challenging any clear chronology or topography of return. The views are aerial shots taken by military airplanes. In including them in her own family image, Ettinger dramatizes, in a closer and more intimate manner, the irreconcilable stakes of memory and return. The spectral, unconscious optics that emerge in her composite images blend the spaces of the individual journey of return with a larger global awareness of contested space and competing geopolitical interests.25 Hers is an enlarged map that incorporates the losses of the Holocaust into a broader intertwined psychology and geography of irrecoverable loss. The illegibility of her works, moreover, and the multiple generations they have undergone in the process of copying and reproduction, signal the loss of materiality that the objects and images have suffered in the multiple expulsions they survived in faded and sometimes unrecognizable form.
