Chapter 50

Stephanie

Still pissed at Alex for what she’d said earlier, Stephanie drove home in silence, replaying the scene in her mind. How dare Alex try to pin Miranda’s situation on her? She was tired of being looked down on because of Corey’s business dealings. Besides, none of them had perfect men, so who were any of them to be judging hers?

Sitting in her living room now, downing a glass of Corey’s liquor, Stephanie was filled with mixed emotions. Although she was pissed about being blamed for Miranda’s bad decisions, she also felt sad for her friend. She had hoped that Miranda would show up at Jada’s dinner. She was really hoping to see her doing well and looking better than before. The fact that she had not shown up at all only led Stephanie to believe that she was somewhere coked out of her mind or was simply hiding out, avoiding the shameful looks and the judgment of the girls.

She threw back the drink and pursed her lips as the liquor stung her throat. She massaged her temples and felt like she was about to scream from frustration. Faintly, she heard the muffled sounds of her phone ringing. Scrambling, she reached across the love seat to grab her purse. Buried deep inside, among papers, her wallet, her lip gloss, and other items, she finally found her phone. She rushed to answer before the caller hung up, praying that it was Corey.

“Hello,” she said breathlessly.

“Where’ve you been?” His voice was angry.

She was caught off guard. “At Jada’s.” Then she realized that he was the one who had run out on her, and not the other way around. “Where have you been?”

“Locked the fuck up because of your stupid ass.”

Her heart skipped a beat, and she sat up straight, trying to shake off the effects of the alcohol. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“What? You haven’t seen the news, Steph? Shit’s all over the fuckin’ news tonight. What the fuck made you take the wallet out, Steph? Nobody knew that shit was there. Nobody. But with your jealous, snooping ass, I know it had to be you. Why couldn’t you just stay out of it? Them motherfuckers said somebody tipped them off that you tossed that shit in a trash can. A fuckin’ public trash can, Steph. What the fuck was that about? I almost think you wanted them to catch my ass. Is that where you’re at with it? Don’t you know they checked that shit for fingerprints, dummy? They got my prints, and guess what other idiot’s prints are on that shit?”

The question was a bit muffled, but she heard it all the same, and a feeling of doom fell all over her.

“Where are you?” he muttered. She could tell his teeth were clenched as he spoke.

“Home,” she said softly.

“Pack some stuff and leave the house. I need you to do a real solid. You got those keys?”

“Yes.”

“Check your text messages. My dude texted you an address earlier, when I was first trying to reach yo’ ass.
