GREECE ATHENA

IWAS REALLY PSYCHED TO go to middle school and high school. Most kids, they don’t get too psyched about school, but I wasn’t like most kids about school. I liked all the noise and activity of school. I liked the social part of school. I didn’t care too much about the actual school part, but I didn’t mind it too much either, and I liked seeing all my friends and having someplace exciting to go to each day. Otherwise, it can get pretty boring, just hanging around the house and waiting for the other kids on my block to get home from what ever they were doing. I also liked learning some of the stuff I learned in my classes. I liked subjects like math. I didn’t like to read too much, but I liked if they could tell me about it in class.

My parents were psyched about me going to middle school and high school, too. This is what they tell me now, but it’s also what they told me back then. Since I was little, they were worried I would never go to school with the regular kids in my neighborhood. That was one of their biggest concerns. They worried they would have to keep finding some new BOCES program for me every year. They worried I would be so many places I wouldn’t fit in anywhere, or that I’d spend so much time back and forth on the special bus I had to take to get to a school that was far away from my house, or that the regular kids wouldn’t want to have anything to do with me. My mom was really upset about this. She tells me now she used to go into her room to have a good cry about it. I don’t remember that.

As I got older, as I got more and more involved with sports and my brother and his friends, I became more and more social. I think this helped with my autism, me being involved in sports and being more social. Every year when I went in for my physical, Dr. Vora used to tell my mom he was surprised by my development, by how well I was doing, because as a kid I had been diagnosed as severely autistic, but when I got to be ten and twelve and fourteen, it wasn’t so severe anymore. It was more mild. So that’s what I mean when I say it probably helped with my autism. Probably I could never read or write or think about things the same way as the other kids, but I was able to do a lot more than anyone ever thought, and now here I was ready to go to school with the regular kids in my neighborhood.

We go to Greece Athena, which is one of four high schools in Greece, which is the suburb where we live in Rochester. The others are Greece Arcadia, Greece Olympia, and Greece Odyssey, and you have to go to one of those depending on where you live.
