Chapter Seventeen

“There was an accident, and Elizabeth was hurt,” Darcy announced bravely as he stood in front of his brother and father-in-law. “She sprained both of her ankles. She will not be able to walk unassisted for the next few weeks.”

The expression on the faces of his companions, though reflecting their alarm at first, quickly calmed.

“Where did she go?” Thomas asked, his voice matter-of-fact and resigned.

“The day after our arrival here, I woke up alone,” Darcy explained. “At first I was not overly concerned. I thought that she had already dressed and was touring downstairs, curious about her new home. Very soon I realized that she was nowhere to be found, not even in the library. It turned out that the butler had let her out at seven in the morning. She had explained to him that she was going for a stroll. She had walked four miles away from the house, into the forest behind the park. She had fallen into the gorge and was not able to get out on her own. I found her after she had been gone for five hours.”

The library went silent, the Bennet men exchanging a long look between themselves.

“That sounds very much like our Lizzy,” Mr. Bennet acknowledged at last.

“I was terrified when I could not find her for so many hours,” Darcy added, a cold feeling overpowering him as he remembered the day before.

“I can well believe that,” Thomas spoke sympathetically. “Even now when you are telling us about it, you are uncharacteristically pale.”

“What does the doctor say?” Mr. Bennet wanted to know. “Will she recover completely?”

“Oh, yes, she will,” Darcy answered, his relief obvious. “The doctor said that had the injuries been worse, she might have been crippled for the rest of her life. Fortunately, she will return to full health, conditional on her staying off her feet for a month, something I have every intention to ensure,” he said with quiet determination.

Mr. Bennet stepped closer, placing a reassuring hand on Darcy’s shoulder. “Do not think that we blame you. It is not the first time and, in all probability, it will not be the last when something like this happens to Lizzy. She will be fine. She is a fast healer.”

“Oh, it was the last time,” Darcy announced, his forehead creased. “I will make sure of that.”

Thomas raised a sceptical eyebrow. “Pray tell me what plans you have made and how exactly you intend to execute your will?”

Darcy straightened up. “I have already informed her how much I disapproved of her behaviour. She may not be the most pleased with me now, but I am certain that in time she will see reason.”

“I hope that you will succeed in you endeavour, my friend. I truly do,” Thomas said, even though his expression was doubtful.

“I trust that she is far too intelligent not to see the error in her behaviour,” Darcy replied.

“It is my fault,” Mr. Bennet said, full of remorse. “I should have been more strict with her when she was a child.
