âI think we have everything set for tomorrow,â Roger said as he wiped down the largest counter in the restaurantâs kitchen Friday night.
Will peered inside the refrigerator and shook his head. âNo, we donât. We have a problem.â He picked up a container of tomatoes. âWe wonât make it through tomorrow with just these.â He set the container back into the refrigerator and then turned to his brother. âCan you get Danielleâs driver to take you home?â
âI was going to ride home with Danielle anyway. But what are you planning?â
âIâll see if I can get Austin to take me by Salinaâs haus, and Iâll buy enough tomatoes from her to last until Wednesday.â
Roger narrowed his eyes and tilted his head. âDo we really need tomatoes? Or is this just a reason to see Salina?â
Will opened the refrigerator and pointed to the small package. âDo you think this is enough to make it until Wednesday?â
âNo, but I donât think we need more tonight.â
âI do, and Iâm the chef around here. We have enough to do in the morning.â
âWhatever you say, boss.â Roger threw his hands into the air and then pulled off his apron. âSee you later.â
âRog,â Will called after him. âWait.â
Roger turned and looked at him. âWhat?â
âHow are things going with Danielle?â
Rogerâs expression softened. âWeâre getting to know each other. Sheâs really sweet, and we get along well.â
âWhen are you going to ask her out?â
âSoon.â Roger rubbed the back of his neck, a gesture Will had always seen him do when he was nervous.
âWhat are you afraid of?â
Roger pursed his lips. âWhat if she says no?â
Will grinned. âTrust me. She wonât say no.â
âDonât worry about me.â Roger pointed at him. âYou need to worry about what youâre doing to Caroline by spending so much energy on Salina. Trust me when I tell you youâll regret it.â He turned and started toward the exit. âIâm leaving.â
After Will locked up, he climbed into Austinâs van. Austin had no problem taking the short ride to Salinaâs house. But when he steered into the driveway just past the Lancaster County Cabinets sign, Willâs heart pounded with doubt. Maybe this was a bad idea. Hadnât he concluded he shouldnât visit Salinaâs house when theyâd talked about her garden?
But this was different. He needed those tomatoes.
âI wonât be long,â he told Austin before walking up the driveway to the two-story, white house with the wraparound porch. He scanned the property, taking in the large, red barn and four matching workshops that sat in front of a pasture fence.
Beyond the pasture, he spotted Salinaâs vast garden, and he smiled. It was more glorious than he imagined. The garden was large, and the raised beds, surrounded by fencing, seemed to reach the sky. The rows were uniform, and the plants were green and beautifully tended.
âMay I help you?â
Will spun to find an Amish man, who looked to be about his age, staring at him with a stern expression. He was just about Willâs height, and he had the same light-brown hair and bright-blue eyes Salina had.
