Chapter Nineteen

Brooklyn

“Can you hear me?” I heard an unfamiliar voice ask.

I struggled to open my eyes. A whiff of brightness hit my pupils as they opened. Then I quickly closed them.

“Mrs. Lewis, how are you feeling?”

I forced my eyes open again to see who was speaking to me. A moment later, I noticed it was a short, stocky Filipino doctor. I glanced at my surroundings and realized I was in a hospital. Why the fuck was I in a hospital? I quickly searched my memory, but I was coming up empty.

“Doctor, why am I here? How did I get here?”

“I believe your husband brought you in. He found you unresponsive on the floor. You might’ve fallen.”

“Unresponsive? What is wrong with me?” I shot the doctor a dirty look.

“Well, from what I came up with, you are dehydrated, and I think he mentioned a little nausea. I ran some tests on you, and your tests all seem normal. Your husband told me you were quite stressed for a few days, and he believes your body just shut down on you.”

I don’t recall none of this shit that he was talking about, so I just listened to him.

“So, how long do I have to be here?”

“Well, I have you on IV drip, antibiotics, and nausea medicine. You’re good to go in the morning if all is well.”

“Hey, sweetheart, you’re awake. I was afraid you might still be asleep,” Jihad said as he popped into the room with flowers and balloons.

He rushed over to me and kissed me on the forehead.

“Doc, how is she doing?”

“Mr. Lewis, I was just talking with your wife. Everything is looking good so far. Nothing is showing up in her blood that would have me alarmed. I would love to keep her overnight, and if all is well, you can take her home in the morning. But she still needs to rest for a few more days and take the antibiotic I’m going to prescribe.”

“Doc, no worries. I’ll take good care of her.” Jihad rubbed my shoulder while he smiled.

“OK, guys, talk to y’all later.” Then the doctor disappeared out the door.

“Hey, babes, how are you feeling?” Jihad said as he sat on the edge of the bed.

I had more questions than I had answers. What the fuck happened to me? I started to search my mind, but I couldn’t remember shit. I remember feeling ill and Jihad bathing me, but this shit was strange. And I drank the soup he brought me. He stopped by to visit, but everything else was a blur after that. Even if I fainted because of dehydration, why the hell is my memory gone?

“Babes, this is strange.” I turned to look at him.

“Huh? What’s strange, love?” He turned his attention away from his phone and looked at me.

“Me passing out like that, and the doctor can’t tell me what’s going on with me. I mean, I’ve been feeling ill, but not like I was fucking dying. Did I say anything before I passed out?”

“Nah, love, you ain’t said anything.
