Chapter 35. Healing Power

Maybe they were motivated to get to California, or maybe they were running away. The trio sped out of Nebraska and were deep into Colorado, along the western outskirts of Denver, before breaking radio silence.

"How the hell are ya?" answered Preet.

"Not bad, not bad. The ride is sweet, but the driver is tired, the ass hurts, the stomach is bitching, and the throat is parched. What do you think about a stop, possibly for the night?" enquired Jesse.

"That’s an excellent idea. We're making good time."

"Sweet... ooo, I see a Holiday Inn coming up ahead… it has a bar… and a pool… and a hot-tub! Yep, we're in business."

Jesse geared down and swerved across several lanes to reach the exit, cutting off an RV with New Hampshire plates in the process. The elderly male driver flicked highbeams and flashed the finger.

They agreed to meet in the hotel bar after settling in their rooms. Jesse arrived first. He ordered a Captain and Coke and plopped down in front of a bartop Galaga arcade game. Shortly thereafter, Preet and Johanna strolled in, holding hands and smiling.

“Hey Jesse. How long have you been here?” asked Preet.

Jesse replied, “Hi bro, didn’t see you there. I don’t know, maybe ten, fifteen minutes?” while pounding the fire button and violently jerking the joystick.

“That was some serious driving, we made it pretty far. We should reach La Jolla by tomorrow night,” mused Preet.

"Jesse, do you know if they have any decent food here?" asked Johanna.

"Wings and fries, good enough for me. I'm gonna drink a few Captains and hit the sack. Do you guys want to share a basket or two of food with me?"

"I'm going to bed, I'm beat. What time do you think we'll get back on the road?" asked Preet.

"I'll call you when I wake up. I want to get out as early as possible, we still have a full days drive ahead of us,” replied Jesse without looking away from the video monitor.

"Sounds good. See you tomorrow morning.”

Johanna released Preet's hand and stated, "I'm kind of hungry actually. I’ll split some wings with you Jesse."

Preet turned his head ever so slightly, smirked knowingly, and walked back to the room alone.

The unexpected RSVP distracted Jesse, causing his digital spaceship to be shattered into pieces by enemy fire.

"Oh… ok.”

Jesse eased off the stool and followed Johanna to a secluded table. Johanna ordered a round of drinks and food. They relaxed and stretched their limbs to release tension built-up over the long drive.

Jesse didn’t know what to say to the stunning beauty his best friend was falling head over heels for. He still felt horrible that their first encounter was his rude interruption into Preet’s bedroom. He hoped Johanna would forgive him eventually.

"You sure are a lucky girl Johanna, Preet's a great guy, he's the best friend I've ever had, and he’s so nice, and smart, and…" rambled Jesse awkwardly.

"He certainly is," interrupted Johanna politely.

Lost for any more conversation starters, Jesse focused on slurping his cocktail through a narrow, red, stir straw.
