Essence almost made me drop the bottle of wine I was opening. I told her to meet me on the rooftop of a private location, kind of sending her on a scavenger hunt so she could go shopping for the gifts I’d gotten her along the way. I sent her around in a limousine and made sure she felt safe as she FaceTimed me the whole time.

Now, she was walking toward me, looking like a golden goddess wrapped in the sun. I’d only gotten a few peeks of her dress through the phone, but now, the way the beautiful, one-strap dress laid against her umber skin was breathtaking. She barely had on makeup and, of course, her hair framed her face perfectly. I placed the bottle down and reached for her as she drew closer. Hugging her tightly, I grabbed the bag of gifts out of her hand and placed it on the table.

We shared a kiss that almost made me want to tear her out of her dress. Thank God for the promise we made. I stopped before things got too heavy.

“Wow,” was all I could say as she stood back.

She tugged on my shirt. “Wow, yourself. You look scrumptious.”

Sharing a laugh, I moved a few things around as we settled into our seats. I opened her bag of gifts.

“So, you found everything, I see.”

Her hand flew to her chest. “I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun in my life. At first, I was pissed because you know how long it takes me to flat iron my hair, especially now that it’s growing back like crazy. My edges were sweating as I was running around town, looking for this stuff.” She laughed. “But it was worth it. Thank you, baby.”

I rubbed her arm gently. “It was fun to put together and I’m happy you had fun. Your hair looks perfect,” I said, tugging on it lightly.

“Listen, this half-Cuban and half-black hair gets frizzy at the first drop of water or exercise. Lesson number one through twenty that black men need to remember about a woman.”

Laughing, I poured us both a glass of Merlot. “Well, I’ll get your hair done every week if I need to. But if that’s frizzy, then baby, I’ll take it.”

She blew me a kiss, then asked about my day. I filled her in on everything that happened with Sahana and waited for her reaction.

“Well, that’s kind of unnerving,” she said. “The fact that Sahana picked up on your parents’ weird behavior and think it actually has something to do with the DM is scary, but wait, babe— let’s play around with this idea. What if this girl is telling the truth? Does that mean she’s broken some adoption agreement? Don’t they usually seal the files or something? Does that mean your dad has an outside child?”

I cut my eyes at her.

“I’m just asking. You’re the one considering that this might be true.”

I took a deep breath. “I know, babe. I’m sorry. It’s just wild.
