The Surprise
In exploring her body, Cera had attempted to separate her mind from her physical form. Had she been less detached, she probably would have been forewarned not to touch the little light-hoarding thief. While her mind was abuzz with curiosity and confusion, her body did not share her bewilderment, and it didn't take kindly to her meddling in its affairs.
The second that her mental fingertip brushed up against the tiny sphere of crackling light, Cera's body went into rebellion.
She was jerked back into alignment with her body just in time for pain to lance her skull. As she blinked back tears, she was hit by a wave of nausea that sent bile surging up to burn the back of her throat.
By some miracle, the elven women were still engrossed in their meditation and oblivious to Cera's sudden turmoil. Only Mara took note as Cera climbed to her feet. Not trusting herself to open her mouth, she issued no words of pardon as she turned and headed for the door on shaky legs.
Maewyn attempted to intercept her as she exited the temple, but Cera sidestepped her and jogged for the trees. She made it no more than a dozen paces before turning behind the nearest tree and vomiting.
She'd barely lifted her head when Maewyn was at her side, hovering around her like an agitated wasp.
"What's the matter? What's wrong? Did you accept a drink?"
Propping her back against the tree, Cera threw a vague wave towards the stream. "Can you fetch me some water?"
A second miracle occurred when Maewyn nodded and darted down the hillside without protesting or needling her with further questions.
When Maewyn was out of sight, Cera placed a shaking hand on her middle and closed her eyes. At first, all she saw were the backs of her own eyelids. It was difficult to focus when she felt so nervy and overheated, but she knew that she had to set aside her physical discomfort.
After a moment of starts and stops, she was able to bring up the mental picture of her body. Using her hand as her guide, she quickly homed in on her abdomen and what she suspected to be her womb.
The little orb of light appeared mercifully unaffected by her intrusion. It was right where it had been, still drawing in the light from Cera's body and folding it into its core.
"What are you doing?"
Cera opened her eyes with a start to find Maewyn standing in front of her, arms folded beneath her breasts.
"I thought you were getting water."
"I don't have anything to carry it with, you'll have to come with me." Without taking a breath, she asked, "Are you with child?"
"Didn't we just discuss this?" Cera said, swiftly moving her hand from her abdomen. "I've spent two nights in the aesolin's bed. This isn't that, it's something else. Perhaps I ate bad food, or I have a mild sickness."
Part of her did want to come right out and tell Maewyn what had happened, but it would require a great deal of explaining.
