First Evangeline folded the delicate blue ribbon, then she stitched the pedals into place. The repetitive in and out of the needle calmed her agitation. Since Justine, Eliza, and Kitty created flowers with her, she soaked up the joy and companionship.

“Come and fill your plates,” Tia called.

Instead of their usual stew, dinner consisted of thick slices of ham, baked apples with sugar, and a soft biscuit each.

“It looks delicious,” Evangeline told Tia.

A proud Tia pulled her shoulders back. “A special dinner indeed. Thanks to His Lordship.”

Evangeline’s heart skipped a beat. “Lord Trent was here?”

“No. Remember, he paid us to keep you.” Herta smirked. “Tia went into the village while we were working and purchased food with some of the money.”

“Oh.” How disappointing. She would not pout, and she would enjoy the food. She plopped onto the grass with the children and mimicked their carefree, cross-legged positions.

The salty ham sated her hunger, the sugary apples made her taste buds pop with felicity, and the surprisingly fresh biscuit melted on her tongue.

Unfortunately, it was her turn to wash the dishes. It was not that she minded the chore. However, she hated when Herta was assigned to be her partner. At least Harry was the third on dish duty. He was strong and could carry twice as much as she and Herta.

They were silent as they scrubbed the plates in the freshwater stream. The quietude was fine with Evangeline since it meant Herta was not grumbling at her.

The tranquility did not last on their return trek to camp because Herta grabbed Evangeline by the wrist.

“Ouch.” Evangeline tried to wriggle free, but Herta dug her fingernails into her skin.

“Ye must go tonight before the men come for ye,” Herta growled.

Evangeline was done with Herta’s intimidation machinations. “Let go of me. You are not a fortune teller. You are an ill-tempered, mean-hearted woman.”

“Aye. And do not forget it. If ye are still here tomorrow morning, I will cut out your heart and bury your body where no one will ever find it.” Herta displayed a set of canine-sharp teeth.

Evangeline pulled from her grasp and tromped along the path.

“Listen to me. If ye are still here when the men come for ye, my nephews will die defending ye,” Herta called after her.

Evangeline halted and squeezed her eyelids closed, trying to shut out the sting of Herta’s prediction.

Herta overtook her. “Leave us be, Lady Evangeline. Go back where ye belong.”

She had unsuccessfully tried to leave so many times. But this time, Evangeline would push forward until she reached the next village. She could rest and mourn the loss of Alistair Eaton once she was far away from everyone she cared about.

She stepped into the clearing.

The firelight and rush lanterns lit up the area. Ketchen had returned from his trip and Wilkes strummed his guitar and sang as the children danced.

She spun her ankle in a circle. The pain was almost gone. She could join them for one last merry evening. Once everyone was asleep, she would sneak off.
