Chapter 12

“Never would have believed it if I didn’t see it for myself. Family life sure seems to agree with you, Alex.”

Connor grinned from ear to ear, his eyes going between Alex Walker and his wife, Evelyn, to Todd and Yancey, and finally settling on Tallan. Tallan met his brother’s hard stare. Was that a challenging glare in Connor’s eyes, as if he was looking for a response from Tallan about his comment to Alex?

Tallan shifted in his seat. Even though his annoyance grew, he wouldn’t give his brother the satisfaction of a reaction. Seeing Alex again after all these years, living in a cabin he’d built for his wife and child, brought on a yearning Tallan had never thought possible. Out of all the young men who’d made the journey into the wilderness all those years ago, Alex Walker had been the least likely to ever settle down.

Sitting across the simple wooden table from Tallan, Alex chuckled, giving Tallan an excuse to break eye contact with his brother and look at their friend. Alex held his young son on his lap, bouncing the baby on his knees. The boy, who wasn’t quite a year old, laughed at his father’s antics.

Tallan gnashed his teeth. Thoughts of two little boys plagued him, and a newborn baby he’d only glimpsed for the briefest of moments before he turned his back on them and their mother.

Had Gavin or Garrett ever received the kind of devoted attention and love from their father that Alex bestowed on his son? Tallan cursed under his breath. He’d vowed to put the boys and their mother out of his mind, but the harder he’d fought not to think about them over the weeks, the more everything he encountered seemed to offer some kind of reminder of them. Especially now that he, Connor, Todd, and Yancey had arrived at Alex’s cabin.

Todd certainly hadn’t been lying when he’d said that Alex had taken to being a family man like a fish took to water. Connor had all but called Todd a liar, but even he couldn’t deny the truth any longer. In the short time since their arrival at his cabin, it had been plain to see that Alex was at ease and quite happy in his new role as father and husband.

Alex’s wife, Evie, was an outspoken young woman, quick to smile, who looked at Alex with unmistakable love and devotion in her eyes whenever her gaze met his. Her auburn hair was a shade darker than Lettie’s straw-colored strands, but they were matched in height. Her pretty face radiated with happiness, and she was completely at ease with speaking her mind around her husband.

Lettie had been fearful and reserved, yet the spark glowing in her eyes that she was a strong and resilient woman had been unmistakable. How much more would she be able to endure before Tom Frapp snuffed out that fire completely? Tallan ran a hand over his face. He had to stop thinking about Lettie, dammit.
