CHAPTER SIX
âI canât believe this is happening,â Missy said, sitting in the front passenger seat of my car, her words echoing my own feelings as my mind still reeled about all of the applicants that wanted the business space that seemed perfect for my store (once I cleaned it up).
Missy was upset for an entirely different reason though. The hotel had somehow lost her reservation and there were no other hotels available this week. Some big conference was in town and every room was sold out.
As for me, in addition to the problem with my business space, I couldnât believe Iâd just (accidentally) texted Dylan what had to be the worst after-a-bad-date text in history: Iâd be cool with a do-over date if youâre up for it.
Eeek! Iâd be cool? Who talks like that to a guy they like? Iâd meant to backspace and come up with something better but Iâd hit send instead. I blamed technology for my current disaster. Itâs not like my thumbs are that big, so why do they always tap on the wrong keys?
I couldnât un-send the text (so frustrating) and I couldnât figure out how to get my application in a better position with the landlord, but at least I could figure out how to help Missy. I turned to her. âForget finding another hotel. Why donât you just stay with me while youâre apartment hunting?â
Missyâs face lit up. âYou wouldnât mind?â
âNot at all.â I put the car into drive and headed back toward the apartment. Traffic was light since it was the weekend, so I zipped down the streets with ease. âWe could split that pint of double-chip cookie dough ice cream, too. If you want.â
Drowning my sorrows in raw cookie dough and vanilla ice cream wasnât how Iâd planned to spend the day, but it seemed like we could both use a pick-me-up.
My phone beeped just as I came to a halt at a stoplight. I picked up the phone, hit the text message icon, and my heart skipped. Dylan had texted back: Iâm in. You still want sushi?
I felt a smile spread across my face as I typed back: Thereâs never a time when I donât want sushi.
Honk-honk!
âGreen light,â Missy said, her mouth twitching.
âOops.â I dropped the phone into my lap and drove.
âMr. Adventure?â Missy asked.
I nodded. âWeâre talking about dinner, I think.â
I pulled into my parking space, slipped my phone into my pocket, and got out of the car. My neighbor Rebecca and my other neighbor Jordan were out front arguing.
Jordan said, âIâm being blinded by bedazzlement.â
Rebecca frowned. âItâs called âgood taste,â in case you havenât heard of it.â
Missy turned to me and whispered, âDid he just say . . .?â
âKeep it moving,â I advised, keeping up a steady pace.
My neighbors had been feuding over her plants versus his plants for months now, which was silly considering the community space had so little square footage. And I had to admit that Rebeccaâs blouse did feature a whole lot of sparkly bling.
