Socrates does not specify the purpose for which sight is “adequate” in the case of fingers and the like. It would seem to be adequate for non-problematic identification of fingers and the like. By contrast. . . this same thing—this finger, or perhaps the length of this finger—is both long and short. So sight’s identification of things as long and short, even if correct, is problematic, because apparently contradictory. Now there is nothing in this to suggest sight is adequate for understanding, rather than just identifying, either fingers or things long or short.88
