Chapter Ten

February 8, 1817

Masterson House

Mayfair

The last thing Mia wished to do tonight was attend a rout, but that was what the captain wished for his daughter to do, so she would escort Millie to the event.

She frowned out the carriage window as the vehicle waited in the long line of similar conveyances that approached the townhouse. In fact, the only thing she wanted to do was remain locked in her room and try not to think about the Viscount Wycliffe. What sort of weak-spined ninny had she been yesterday to let him have intimate access to her body, to become so lost in him and his ministrations that she’d completely separated herself from reality for a time?

Especially when, as soon as she’d entered the Featheringham townhouse and located Millie, she’d given the girl an overly strict dressing down against doing the same? Heat filled her cheeks, and she hoped to any deity that was listening she hadn’t been observed exiting Wycliffe’s carriage looking as undone as she’d felt. What was more, she’d accidentally left her cloak in the vehicle, which gave him an excuse to call.

But he hadn’t today, and that had made her a tad out of sorts as well, for she’d become accustomed to him bedeviling her on a daily basis in the guise of calling upon Millie. What is wrong with me that I’m actually missing him?

“If you are going to be so dour and rainclouds tonight, please do not stand anywhere near me, Miss Hasting. You’ll scare away all the men.” The annoyance in Millie’s voice was quite clear.

With a huff, Mia focused her wandering attention on her charge. “I’m sorry to put a damper on your fun for the evening, but that is literally what my position is.” And she’d been doing a poor job of it to this point, but at least Nicholas hadn’t truly been pursuing the girl. “I’m to steer you into the directions of appropriate, eligible men with titles as well as keep you out of their beds until you’ve accepted a proposal.”

The girl shook her head, and in the dim illumination coming from a nearby gas lamp on the street, a trace of vulnerability and doubt went through her eyes. “What if I personally don’t want a titled gentleman any longer?”

“Oh?” This was a new path for her. “What has made you change your mind?”

She waved a hand. “It seems to me the pool of men who hold titles are small, and the men inside that pool who aren’t old or unattractive is even smaller.”

“True.” Had the girl suddenly matured or was there a reason for the statement? “What will you tell your father if you should find this paragon of a man who isn’t titled or part of the English aristocracy?”

“Uh, I’d hoped you would break the news to him if such a thing occurs.”

Their carriage moved forward and would be the next to offload. Mia shook her head. “If you wish to guide your life for yourself, then you need to have the bravery to tell others in that life of your intentions.
