Chapter 12
I watched as Bria took a deep breath and approached the podium with her husband by her side. You could hear a pin drop in the church. No was speaking; no one was moving. Everyone was transfixed by Casey and Bria.
Bria stepped up to the microphone and began, âThe church is fragmented. Just as some of us are fragmented inside. And, church, Iâm talking about me. I have failed the church and the congregation. I have shown you all what sin looks like. It looks like me, your first lady. I know my behavior has been disappointing at a time when I was supposed to be about bringing healing to my church family. I didnât realize that before I could bring the healing here, I needed to bring the healing to myself.
âEverything that happened during Bible study was a blessing in disguise, believe it or not. It opened the doors for conversations that were long overdue. Conversations that cleaned old wounds. It brought about forgiveness, gave clarity.â Tears streamed down her face as she spoke, causing some women in the church to follow suit with their tears.
âI want to tell the church how sorry I am for letting you down, and I ask that you give my husband and me another chance to rebuild as we are working on rebuilding ourselves and our marriage. One thing you donât have to worry about is us ever letting the church down again. We are more committed than any of you will ever know. Second Corinthians 5:20 says, Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Chrisâs stead, be ye reconciled to God. Even me. Iâm holding on to this, because I want to be a blessing to someone else. Iâm here with a job to do, and I plan to take that job more seriously.â
There was a pause after she finished, then the congregation applauded, which surprised my sister. I donât think she had expected them to applaud her or to accept her back.
Before the service, weâd had a pep talk, and I helped her write her address to the church. They decided that they would get baptized during the service to show that they were recommitting to the church. The congregation was really moved by what they saw, and my sister looked on in amazement that they appeared to have forgiven her. What didnât hurt was the fact that Bria and her husband had fired the drummer and gotten rid of the choir girl.
It was incredible to watch how quickly the new drummer learned all the songs. They definitely did their clean-up work swiftly and didnât miss a beat for church service.
After the service, we went to my motherâs house for Sunday dinner. While my mother prepared dinner, Bria, her baby, Justin, and I all sat in the living room. And finally, things felt right.
I was holding the baby, and Bria and I were chatting it up like we had been close for years and years.
