o sea view? For nine hundred quid a week? TripAdvisorâs gonna hear âbout this.â
She snorts. âOn the plus side, Your Majesty, youâve got your penthouse all to yourself. Jacuzzi. Sauna. Minibar.â She taps in the code, swipes her card, and the LED goes green. âHome away from home.â Bolts clunk and the door opens. Bog-standard 8-by-14-foot cell. Shitter. Desk. Chair. Locker. Dirty windows. Seen better. Seen worse.
The door shuts behind meârevealing the bunk bed with some bastard lying on the top. Heâs an Arab, Indian, Asian, something. Heâs as not pleased to see me as Iâm not pleased to see him. I bang on the door. âOy! Guard! This cellâs occupied!â
No joy.
âGuard!â
Daft bloody mooâs moved on.
Todayâs outlook: heavy cloud, all day.
Dump my bag on my bed. âGreat.â I look at the Asian bloke. He ainât got that Rottweiler glint, but yer donât take nothing for granted. Iâm guessing heâs Muslim. âJust came from Wandsworth,â I tell him. âIâm sâposed to be in quarantine. One to a cell. My cellmate had the virus.â
âI tested positive,â Asian Bloke says, âat Belmarsh.â
Belmarsh is a Cat A prison. Iâm thinking, Terrorism?
âNo,â Asian Bloke says. âIâm not an ISIS sympathizer. No, I donât pray toward Mecca. No, I donât have four wives and ten kids.â
Canât deny I was thinking it. âYer donât look ill.â
âIâm asymptomatic.â He clocks. I ainât sure what that means. âIâve got the antibodies, so I donât get sick, but I have the virus, and I can pass it on. You really shouldnât have been put in here.â
Voilà . Classic Ministry of Justice fuck-up. Thereâs an emergency call button, so I press the CALL button.
âI was told the guards here cut the wires,â Asian Bloke says. âAnything for a quiet life.â
I believe it. âProbâly too late by now, anyway. Virus-wise.â
He lights up a roll-up. âYou may be right.â
âHappy fucking birthday to me.â
Water chunders down a pipe.
âIs it your birthday?â he asks.
âJust an expression.â
