As I read the bullet points, I suddenly started to think more deeply about the study.
Honestly, at first I thought it was just a thing they were doing so they could say their app had âa ninety-nine percent success rateâ at helping people find love within âFive Fridays.â But now, looking at Professor Chan, I was way more suspicious.
This might be about something serious.
But, rather than get too freaked out, I reminded myself that Iâve done a lot of experiments both as the studier and the studied. And the best thing to do was just go along as normal. Donât overthink it. Like the time I got a fake side effect booklet when I was in a study for a new cinnamon flavored chewing gum. Suddenly I thought I had âsevere tooth shift.â Your mind can really play tricks on you.
âAll right then,â Research Assistant Tanner stood up. âLetâs get this thing started with a little Friday night Speed Dating!â
The room filled with whispers and buzzes.
âYouâll each have seven two-minute speed dates. You will know your time is up with each dude by this sound.â A soft Ding sounded from the sound system. âNow go!â
The women stood up and started to move, but everyone looked confused.
âYou have all been texted a room number,â Jen said with a glare at Tanner. âFind your classroom. Find your seat. And your dates will come to you. Happy Dating!â
A
Happy Dating. Happy Dating. Happy Dating.
I repeated the words to myself as I maneuvered through the group of women out into the hall. About six minutes later I was in a room with four other women, all of us cordoned off from each other with room dividers. A research assistant I didnât remember seeing in the lecture hall stepped into my mini-room and handed me a folder.
âThanks,â I said.
But he was already on to the next. And he had headphones on.
I flipped through the folder and found pages of suggested âgetting to know youâ questions. I thought that was pretty smart.
Then, on the last page, were questions about who we liked.
My heart started to move to my throat.
âHere we go.â The research assistant opened the door and I could hear the rumbling of men, but because of the way things were set up, I couldnât see them or make out anything they were saying. I took in a huge breath and braced myself.
The first man to walk into my study room was that Jason guy I met at the B&B.
âIâm impressed,â he said as he slid into the desk opposite mine. âThis is one of the more creative ways a girl has tried to date me.â He winked.
âYep,â I said. âThatâs definitely whatâs happening here.â
âYouâre looking pretty good tonight,â he said.
âThanks.â I think. I looked down at the suggested questions. âSo I have these questions here ⦠Letâs see. Hereâs a good one. What are you most proud of in your life?â
âMost proud of?â He draped a well-muscled arm on the back of the chair.
âThatâs what it says.
