As I read the bullet points, I suddenly started to think more deeply about the study.

Honestly, at first I thought it was just a thing they were doing so they could say their app had “a ninety-nine percent success rate” at helping people find love within “Five Fridays.” But now, looking at Professor Chan, I was way more suspicious.

This might be about something serious.

But, rather than get too freaked out, I reminded myself that I’ve done a lot of experiments both as the studier and the studied. And the best thing to do was just go along as normal. Don’t overthink it. Like the time I got a fake side effect booklet when I was in a study for a new cinnamon flavored chewing gum. Suddenly I thought I had “severe tooth shift.” Your mind can really play tricks on you.

“All right then,” Research Assistant Tanner stood up. “Let’s get this thing started with a little Friday night Speed Dating!”

The room filled with whispers and buzzes.

“You’ll each have seven two-minute speed dates. You will know your time is up with each dude by this sound.” A soft Ding sounded from the sound system. “Now go!”

The women stood up and started to move, but everyone looked confused.

“You have all been texted a room number,” Jen said with a glare at Tanner. “Find your classroom. Find your seat. And your dates will come to you. Happy Dating!”

A

Happy Dating. Happy Dating. Happy Dating.

I repeated the words to myself as I maneuvered through the group of women out into the hall. About six minutes later I was in a room with four other women, all of us cordoned off from each other with room dividers. A research assistant I didn’t remember seeing in the lecture hall stepped into my mini-room and handed me a folder.

“Thanks,” I said.

But he was already on to the next. And he had headphones on.

I flipped through the folder and found pages of suggested “getting to know you” questions. I thought that was pretty smart.

Then, on the last page, were questions about who we liked.

My heart started to move to my throat.

“Here we go.” The research assistant opened the door and I could hear the rumbling of men, but because of the way things were set up, I couldn’t see them or make out anything they were saying. I took in a huge breath and braced myself.

The first man to walk into my study room was that Jason guy I met at the B&B.

“I’m impressed,” he said as he slid into the desk opposite mine. “This is one of the more creative ways a girl has tried to date me.” He winked.

“Yep,” I said. “That’s definitely what’s happening here.”

“You’re looking pretty good tonight,” he said.

“Thanks.” I think. I looked down at the suggested questions. “So I have these questions here … Let’s see. Here’s a good one. What are you most proud of in your life?”

“Most proud of?” He draped a well-muscled arm on the back of the chair.

“That’s what it says.
