Tanya had stayed crouched down, keeping a weather eye on the parts of the building still standing, and was wet through from the spray. The fire chief had tried to get her to take a break but she had refused, so he put his jacket round her shoulders as the evening cooled. She sensed that her voice was acting as a lifeline for her father and Nollie but had stopped expecting a response from them. At first she just talked - told them about life in the commune, her friends, and the time they all went to Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice - and when she ran out of things to tell them she started to sing, softly and sweetly, all the songs she had ever known. If she did not know all the words she hummed or sang ‘lalala’. She kept it up for three solid hours until the crane arrived and she had to move so that it could do its work.
In less than half an hour the huge pillar had been moved away from the pile of ruined balconies. The crane went to work on the larger blocks. Every ten minutes or so they would stop the engines and call out and as soon as Nollie replied they would continue. At long last there was a big enough space for someone to crawl in and reach them. It was one of the imported team and he spoke English. Nollie could just see him in silhouette over David’s legs. She told him that David had lost part of his arm and how she had bound it with his belt. He was still groaning as they propped up the weight of the door and eased a board under him. She told them that she was allright, but to rush David to the hospital. The pain in her head was so bad that she lost consciousness again for a few moments and the next thing she knew was the man returning with another board, saying that another ambulance was on its way. He took her by the shoulders and she was able to ease herself onto the board. In spite of the incredible pain that movement caused she made sure that the broken leg was lying straight. The arc lights were so bright they hurt her eyes and she was almost blind again. When they lifted the board onto a stretcher and put her in the ambulance she was told that Tanya had gone on with her father.
They had nearly reached the hospital when her head stopped aching. She took her hand from under the blanket and felt through the matted cap of blood above her ear. The bone was solid and strong. She moved her left leg. It was no longer broken, but the leg still hurt, as did her back and right upper arm. Perhaps the talisman could not cope all at once with so many wounds at one time. She would think about that later, it was just so marvellous that the pain was gone from her head.
