Iglimpsed over at Herb, and he looked like a kid in a candy store. We were standing in the lobby of an auction house, waiting for our turn to bid on a house. I was nervous as hell. I couldn’t even front. The houses we would be bidding on were all in Richmond Heights, and they were either under foreclosure or they had a tax lien on the property.

Johansen and Saadiq had partnered with us, which I already knew would be the case so we had the funds to walk away with a few good properties. The thing was, these purchases were made, sight unseen, so we really wouldn’t know what we were getting into until we got the keys to the house and went and inspected it ourselves. I was looking for the houses that I thought would be the quickest to flip and get someone in. I had a strategy. I just needed to follow my gut and not overthink shit too much.

We had been waiting for a minute, but finally, they opened the doors, and we made our way further inside the building. It was an adrenaline rush being here and knowing all the other folks anticipated walking away with property too. This auction was about to be highly competitive. That much I knew, but I was prepared for whatever.

My eyes adjusted to the bright lights overhead, and I took in all the people who were there. There was some of everybody present. People from all walks of life were here. Seasoned veterans, with their confident demeanor, and the newcomers who stood out like sore thumbs.

Taking in the scene, I noticed rows upon rows of chairs occupied by prospective buyers eagerly waiting for the auction to begin. A sea of faces and most of them didn’t look like ours. This was why it was important for us to be here. We needed more people like us involved in these types of things if we wanted them to stop infiltrating and then taking over our communities.

We found seats near the back of the auction hall, strategically positioning ourselves to quietly observe the intricate workings of the event. From our concealed vantage point, hidden from prying eyes, I eagerly awaited the auctioneer’s opening remarks, sensing the impending challenge that lay ahead.

As the auction commenced, the bidding initially unfolded at a leisurely pace, gradually gaining momentum with each successive bid. Excitement filled the room as the prices climbed higher and higher, escalating the tension in the air. The rhythmic repetition of the auctioneer’s voice, punctuated by the occasional, “Sold!” echoed through the room, amplifying the intensity of the bidding war.

Eventually, the spotlight narrowed down to a captivating duel between Herb and another determined bidder, both fiercely vying for ownership of a coveted property. The stakes soared higher than anyone anticipated, surpassing the financial thresholds both parties were initially willing or able to pay. It was a testament to the allure and desirability of this particular asset. Herb got lucky when no other bidder matched his offer price, making us the new owners.
