Laura continued to cuddle the puppy in her arms while the football fieldâs parking lot emptied out, people either walking the few blocks home or climbing into their pickups.
The idea of entertaining in the Wyldersâ big house with that wonderful stone patio had her excited. And she was going to Leviâs birthday party. The man deserved a bit of pampering given all the weight he seemed to carry for his family. Honestly, she wasnât sure which she was more excited aboutâgetting a chance to put on the shindig or to spoil him a little.
âLevi, do you have time to help me secure my bookshelf to the wall tonight?â Mrs. Wylder asked, jangling her keychain and taking a few steps away from the group as though preparing to leave. âIâm going to be babysitting Kurt next week and Iâm worried heâll try to climb it.â
Levi glanced from Laura to his brother before reluctantly nodding. âI ordered a new air filter for your car, too, Mom. I figured it was due, and Clintâll charge you through the nose to change it out.â
âYouâre a good man,â she said, giving him an affectionate smile. Then she tugged at the longish hair around his ears, eyebrows raised.
âI know,â he muttered. âHaircut. Itâs on the list.â
âAnd you know if youâre too busy with the ranch, Clint said heâd pop by the house and swap that filter out for me.â
âHe did?â Leviâs eyes narrowed, and Laura adored how his protective side included his mother. It made Laura want to dream up something so heâd come by and help her out, too. Maybe kiss her.
That crush was never going to go away, was it?
âHe does that for everyone in town,â Maria said, in a tone that was both amused and soothing.
âI donât think he does.â Levi frowned at Brant. âDoes he do that for you?â
His brother shrugged. âI take care of my own stuff.â
Levi didnât seem entirely convinced as he began to walk away with his mother. He paused, looking at the puppy dozing in Lauraâs arms, then at her. âIf you need anything, shoot me a text.â
âWhat would I need?â Laura grinned at him. âAn oil change?â
Ryan and Brant laughed, while Levi scowled halfheartedly before a smile managed to break loose. She loved the way his eyes sparkled when he smiled. He was a handsome man. A good one, too.
âI gotta run. Nice meeting you,â Ryan said, heading toward Myles, who had reappeared across the parking lot with Jackie.
As he went, Henry, the cranky old man from the diner, called out to him, âWhat was your quarterbackâs problem tonight? We want to go to state!â
âHeâs a kid. Heâs allowed bad days. Give him a break,â Ryan called back.
âAnd thatâs why youâll never make it to the championship game!â
âHeâs a fun man,â Brant mumbled under his breath, and Laura gave a half laugh of agreement. âYouâve had the pleasure of meeting Sweetheart Creekâs welcoming committee, I presume?â
He turned his back to Henry, and Laura shifted as well. Brant was a little shorter than her, she noted, which wasnât atypical, seeing as she was over six feet.
