Chapter Fourteen

Brexton

Mike pulls into the parking spot next to my car. “Home sweet home, Brex.”

“Yes, and I have a long list of things I need to get done.”

As we get out of the car, he looks at me with those sexy blue eyes. “Just tell me what and I’ll help.”

“Thanks. I do have one request. Would you mind me sleeping in your room so LaShaya, Hayden, and the baby can have mine while they’re here? If it’s a problem I could take the couch.”

“Not a chance. You’re with me. My bed. Done. Next?”

We laugh as we walk to our patio gate. It’s so easy spending time with him.

Once inside our apartment, we hear someone pounding on our front door.

“Can’t rest a minute.” I rush to answer it.

I find a guy about my age standing on our front steps. He’s quite average looking except for the mole on his cheek. Since I don’t know him, I ask, “Can I help you?”

“You’re Brexton Doyle, correct?”

Before I can answer, Mike comes up beside me and goes into full-on cop mode. “Who’s asking?”

“Oh. Officer Tucker. I recognize you from your photo at the department.” The man smiles. “Great. This is the right place. I’m Sam Nixon. I’m a reporter who is interested in your incredible story and how you two rescued all those girls. The big story, of course, is that you rescued your very own sister, Officer Tucker. May I come in?”

Mike stiffens. “No, you may not. I understand you already have spoken to my chief who told you no interviews. Now, I’m telling you. No interviews.”

“What about you, Mr. Doyle?” Nixon’s voice turns slick, like a used car salesman trying to pawn off a junker. “It’s a big story. I believe it could go national.”

“You’ve been given your answer. Good-bye, Mr. Nixon.” I shut the door. “That takes care of that.”

“Brex, thank you. I hope you understand why it’s not a good idea to talk to him or any reporter for that matter.”

“Yeah, I get it. The last thing that needs to happen is for you and your sister’s names to show up in the newspaper. As long as there are creeps in that human trafficking ring still unaccounted for, no interviews. What is the media calling the guy who leads the whole operation?”

“You do get it.” He smiles. “The leader of the ring is called Shadow. You’re going to make a great cop.”

“We’ll see, but for now I need to put fresh sheets on my bed for LaShaya and Hayden.”

“You’re anxious to get the place ready for them.”

“Mike, you get me too.”

Mike stands at attention and salutes me. “Officer Tucker, reporting for duty, sir. Where can I begin?”

“You’re the best.” I kiss him, which sends a spark through my body. I stare into his gorgeous eyes.

“You better quit looking at me like that or we’re not going to get anything done.” Mike grins wickedly. “But after the apartment is cleaned to your satisfaction, I intend on finishing what you started with that sexy kiss to my satisfaction.
