What is self-confidence?

Self-confidence is a deep knowing of yourself and assurance of your abilities, resources, potential and personal judgement. It gives you agency in your life and allows you to harness and grow your inner power.

A self-confident person, often without shouting, or needing to declare it, exhibits their abilities in a natural and effortless way. They don’t tell people who they are, they show people who they are. The life they lead and the relationships they have speak for themselves. Perhaps they make it look easy, but the reality is, like anything worthy of cultivation, it takes time.

There are individuals that seem to have been born with a bounty of the stuff, but through my own research I know they are certainly not the majority, and those who possess self-confidence and enjoy its benefits have each had to crack their own individual code. This provides hope for us all, whether you were raised by an outgoing beacon of enthusiasm or your caregiver was very much a glass-half-empty kind of person.

Confidence is not an inherent attribute or a permanent, guaranteed state, no matter how unflappable you believe someone to be. It’s fair to say that some people are born with more of the stuff than others, but most of us will need to work at it.

Even your best mate that always knows the right words to say is nervous about getting back in the dating game after their break-up.

Even your creative pal struggles to show up for their writing because they don’t believe what they have to say is of worth.

Even your sibling that laughed off that minor car crash at the time, now dreads driving and struggles with anxious feelings.

A life event or a negative mindset can wobble and topple the confidence of even the most capable, bright humans.

On any given day you will be standing somewhere on the self-

confidence scale, scoring yourself anywhere from one to ten, with one being when you are feeling low and vulnerable (when you find yourself hugging a radiator) and ten when you are feeling unstoppable, with your heart bursting out of our chest (think about when you get a text or call with the news that your hard work has paid off and you feel pumped up and proud of yourself).
