Narratives of Spiritual, Astral,
and Subtle Bodies Aren’t Going Away
All you have to do is go to a Hollywood movie to see a depiction of spirit bodies, astral bodies, auras, and so on. For the sake of the movie, such phenomena have to be portrayed objectively, which might range from a special effects “light body” to someone swathed in tinfoil. With the use of music and other techniques, the movie industry even has ways to portray vibrations from such a body, such as when a person is walking down a street at night and decides either to walk past someone or go the other way.
In nearly all esoteric, mystical, or occult teachings, there’s a recognition of a “soul” or “spirit”—some kind of body in the subtle realms—that underlies the physical body. In many traditions, this body continues on into the spiritual realms after death of the physical body. All the indigenous shamanic traditions understand this, and often characterize this spirit body with metaphors related to nature. As we have seen, words derived from ancient terms for breath or wind are the most common. Both the world of the spirit and its actions are similarly portrayed in nature symbols: sun and moon, rivers and oceans, and even fire. Characterized as the immutable primordial stuff each of us is, the spirit or soul is considered the seat of the sacred and is referred to as such in nearly all the world’s religions. Think of “the most sacred body” in Islam, the “immortal nature” in mystical Christianity, the “diamond” and “body of light” in Taoism and Buddhism, and the “seat of inherent bliss” in many Hindu Yogic traditions.
Nearly all views of the spirit realms as interactive are based on these notions of countless spirits or souls. It’s this soul or spirit body with which the shaman or medium communicates, and there exists a vast literature about work in the spirit realms, full of fantastic accounts of astral traveling and celestial happenings. They are the accounts of individual adepts from across the world’s many spiritual traditions, often reflecting and paralleling the larger sagas of those peoples, and including descriptions of the gods and spirit entities of their sacred texts.
These are not just narratives of individual souls and their exploits, but also portray each sacred tradition’s ideas of the human subtle body, its structure and its energies. Some of the most well-known of these are the descriptions of the energy body, with its centers and meridians associated with the ancient healing arts of acupuncture and hot stone placement. Anthropologists now propose that acupuncture-related modalities that use stones or needles may date back as far as the Ice Age, far earlier than later drawings and renderings of the centers and meridians that emerged as the world entered its God-King epoch. Accounts emerged 5,000 years ago in the Ayurveda healing arts in India and 4,000 years ago in the Shang Dynasty of China. A frozen mountain man, carbon dated to perhaps 10,000 years ago on the cusp of the last Ice Age, was found to have a satchel of the special stones reflective of this ancient art.
