Many Black children come to blame one of their parents for their “bad” features or color. Some Black parents even encourage this; typical of these is the mother who, while applying chemical straighteners to her daughter’s tight, kinky hair, would say:

Don’t blame me, you got that head of hair from your father. Lord, child, you better not marry no nappy-headed man ’cause I can’t deal with no Brillo-headed grandbabies.
