BACK AT THE CABIN, Lucy cursed her very existence.

“Sore. So very sore.” She had known this would happen. Between being flung from a horse and walking back to the cabins, her body was so sore she could barely move and it was only six p.m. By tomorrow she wouldn’t be able to get out of bed.

“I’m not sore at all,” Gen said, hugging Randy. “Did you miss me today, my sweet boy?”

Randy’s tongue darted out and splatted Gen’s ear several times before she could pull him away. Lucy didn’t tell her friend that Vivian had confessed to killing a quart of salted-caramel ice cream while everyone else had been riding, and she’d let Randy lick the carton.

“You’re not sore because you didn’t walk five miles today,” Lucy said. Once she had abandoned Blackbeard, she’d resigned herself to walking the entire way back to the main house. It was grueling in her wet clothing and shoes, but better than putting her life back in the hands—or hooves—of the horse from Hell.

Both Tanner and Alec had offered to share their saddle, but she couldn’t turn down Tanner and then accept Alec’s offer without it being rude, so she was paying for it now. Her thighs ached and her calves burned. Her back and neck were stiff and her butt was so tender flexing to move was like getting a shot of penicillin.

“You had a perfectly good horse to ride,” Gen said.

“The words good and horse do not belong in the same sentence when talking about Blackbeard. He’s an equine psychopath.”

Gen laughed and stood with Randy snuggled in her arms. “Are you coming? The pool water will make it all better. There’s a jacuzzi.” Gen was decked out in a tiny pink one-piece bathing suit. It had a frilly white ruffle across the bodice and made her look like she was twelve years old.

“Maybe later.” Lucy had managed to get into her swimsuit but wasn’t sure she could walk the distance to the pool.

“Suit yourself. Oh, hey! There’s a water volleyball game scheduled for later. Could be a chance to see if you like that sporty stuff. Didn’t you do that with one of your guys?”

“Pancake Face,” Lucy moaned.

“Oh yes, the cheater. So, this is your chance to see if you really like that stuff.”

“Not a good time, Gen. At present, I hate breathing, much less playing water volleyball.”

Lucy lay on her back, sprawled across her bed. Her lime green bikini with its little yellow polka-dots hugged her body, covering all the places that weren’t socially acceptable to leave visible. Ah, for the days of Ned the Nudist. Even the bathing suit was hurting her fatigued body.

Her cell phone vibrated. “Ugh. I can’t even,” she said without moving.

Gen dropped Randy onto the bed and hurried over to click on the phone. She held it to Lucy’s ear.

“Hello, Trina.”

“Don’t use my real name, what if they’ve tapped your line.”

“Trina, I’m not in rehab or prison.” Why had she told the sisters about the no-phone rule?

Gen snickered quietly.
