Who was Jeremiah?

“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.”

JEREMIAH 31:31

The third person Jesus was compared to was Jeremiah.

Jeremiah told the people of Jerusalem if they did not repent, God would allow them to be conquered. His message didn’t make him popular. In the end, Jeremiah was proven right. Jerusalem fell to Babylonian forces, and the nation of Israel was scattered.

Like Jeremiah, Jesus’s harsh message for the religious elite of Jerusalem was rejected. His call to repentance was met with violence. Interestingly, it was Jeremiah who prophesied that Jesus would set up a new covenant with the people of Israel in Jeremiah 31.

Jeremiah 31:33–34 says, “‘This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,’ declares the LORD. ‘I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, “Know the LORD,” because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,’ declares the LORD. ‘For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.’”

When we recognize our need for a Savior, repent, and trust Jesus, we are forgiven and the Holy Spirit lives within us.
