The Coast

The sun was beginning to set now as the company had made their way to the coast in a rather boring final stretch. They could smell the salt in the air, hear the waves crashing on the shore, and more importantly, they could see a large village that sat directly on the beach. Its walls were wooden and tall and it featured four watchtowers on each corner. The Great Hall’s roof was tall and could be seen for miles with its iconic Norse architecture.

“The clan of the Eagle,” Frigyth said, examining the village in all of its glory. “We finally made it.”

“That we have, young lass,” Ivar said with Halfdan under his arm. He was feeling better but walking for an entire day, even with the medicine, was hard on him. He needed medical attention quickly.

“Alright,” Njal began, scanning the village walls intently. “Let us get Halfdan some help. Ivar, you take him to the nearest healer you can find while Frigyth and I will go talk to Jarl Torin. There is much to be discussed and if he is as stubborn as you said, then he will take a lot of convincing.”

“Aye,” Ivar said as they took their first steps down the hill and made their way towards the front gates.

After a brief stint of walking, they arrived at the gates. Two guards peered over and hollered down.

“Halt!” one of them yelled. “Who are you!”

“I am Njal, that is Halfdan, Ivar, and the lovely Frigyth,” he said looking up at the guard.

“What be the meanin’ of yer arrival?” the other guard asked. He held a shield in his right hand that featured a painting of an Eagle with black and blue colors.

“We need to speak to Jarl Torin as quickly as possible, and my friend Halfdan here needs some help from your healer,” Njal said.

“What clan do ye belong to?” the guard asked as the sun set behind the horizon.

“We don’t belong to any clans. We just need to speak to Jarl Torin.”

“Nomads, huh?” the guard, asked clearing his throat. “Open the gates,” he said below him. “Give the two in the back an escort to the healer and the other two an escort to see Jarl Torin.”

The friends watched as the large gates creaked opened, showcasing the inside of the village. Four fully armed guards were waiting inside for them to enter.

“Well, here we go,” Njal said looking back and smiling at his fellow companions. “After we are finished speaking with Torin, we shall seek out the healer’s hut and meet you both there, agreed?”

“Aye, we be in agreement,” Ivar said happily.

“See you both soon,” Halfdan said with a large glowing grin on his face.

Once they entered the village, they nodded at one another as the guards led them in different directions. Halfdan and Ivar were taken towards the healer’s hut while Njal and Frigyth were taken to the Great Hall.

Njal looked around and took in the sights. The streets were bustling with bunches of people that were talking, laughing, drinking and shopping.
