Another thing that came back to me while writing …

As a teen, I spent a lot of time with my parents instead of friends. The reason was simple: my parents were more fun. But it wasn’t exactly cool to go places with them at that age. I remember being in line at the movie theater one Saturday night with my dad, and I studied the other kids on dates. The girls were giggly-looking, smiling at the boys, laughing at the (likely) inane humor. So I decided to put extra effort into being happy, smiling, and laughing with my dad instead of wearing a surly look that teenagers can easily take on. Of course, my demeanor made him happy, but the interesting outcome for me was that it made me happier, more comfortable, and more confident.
