George traded Rawly to Philadelphia today for Jay Johnstone, a left-handed first baseman, and for a minor league outfielder. I donât know whoâs responsible, whether it was Billy or George, though from what Billy said Iâm almost certain it was George, but I wish they would cut out the crap. One guyâs doing everything he can to get the club going, and soâs the other guy, and the combination of both of them is screwing everything up. The two of them ought to just leave us alone. That trade is ridiculous to me. I saw Rawly pitch. The guy can pitch. All you heard about him was he didnât pitch like he used to. Who cares? He was getting people out when they let him pitch, which wasnât very often. He wasnât doing any worse than anyone else. In fact, he was pitching better than most. I have absolutely no idea why they traded him. Weâve given up a pitcher who could get guys out and we got a left-handed pinch hitter who we donât need. Now weâre going to have to use guys in the bullpen who arenât ready to throw. Dirtâs fingerâs hurting him. Whoâs left out there? Me and Gossage and Kenny Clay.
Billy was complaining too. âAll I have is a lot of pinch hitters and nobody to play,â he said.
I guess Rawlyâs not going to make that sculpture out of the little things we found during the season. Thatâs too bad. I was kinda looking forward to seeing what he would have made.
Everybody hates to see Rawly go. And he found out that he didnât want to go either. After a while, he really loved it here. Before he left, I shook his hand and said good-bye. He said he was going to try to commute between here and Philadelphia so he wouldnât have to sell his house. I told him if he had a day off and we were around to give me a call. He said he would. Then he walked out the clubhouse door and left.
Somehow, everyone managed to keep it from George that I walked out before yesterdayâs game! I canât believe it! George doesnât even know! This morning I got a call at home. It was Rosen. He said, âSparky, I swear to God on my life that George and I were talking about you yesterday.â He said, âSparky, you have to believe me. I told George yesterday when we were talking about the Carew deal, I said, âYou have to take care of that man first. You canât just go and do things. You have to think about things.ââ Rosen said, âI canât tell you where, when, or how. All I can tell you is George said heâs going to take care of you, Figueroa, and Randolph.â
I told him, âI canât take this crap anymore. I donât feel like pitching. Every time I try to get my act together again, something else happens like this where I donât give a damn again.
