George traded Rawly to Philadelphia today for Jay Johnstone, a left-handed first baseman, and for a minor league outfielder. I don’t know who’s responsible, whether it was Billy or George, though from what Billy said I’m almost certain it was George, but I wish they would cut out the crap. One guy’s doing everything he can to get the club going, and so’s the other guy, and the combination of both of them is screwing everything up. The two of them ought to just leave us alone. That trade is ridiculous to me. I saw Rawly pitch. The guy can pitch. All you heard about him was he didn’t pitch like he used to. Who cares? He was getting people out when they let him pitch, which wasn’t very often. He wasn’t doing any worse than anyone else. In fact, he was pitching better than most. I have absolutely no idea why they traded him. We’ve given up a pitcher who could get guys out and we got a left-handed pinch hitter who we don’t need. Now we’re going to have to use guys in the bullpen who aren’t ready to throw. Dirt’s finger’s hurting him. Who’s left out there? Me and Gossage and Kenny Clay.

Billy was complaining too. “All I have is a lot of pinch hitters and nobody to play,” he said.

I guess Rawly’s not going to make that sculpture out of the little things we found during the season. That’s too bad. I was kinda looking forward to seeing what he would have made.

Everybody hates to see Rawly go. And he found out that he didn’t want to go either. After a while, he really loved it here. Before he left, I shook his hand and said good-bye. He said he was going to try to commute between here and Philadelphia so he wouldn’t have to sell his house. I told him if he had a day off and we were around to give me a call. He said he would. Then he walked out the clubhouse door and left.

Somehow, everyone managed to keep it from George that I walked out before yesterday’s game! I can’t believe it! George doesn’t even know! This morning I got a call at home. It was Rosen. He said, “Sparky, I swear to God on my life that George and I were talking about you yesterday.” He said, “Sparky, you have to believe me. I told George yesterday when we were talking about the Carew deal, I said, ‘You have to take care of that man first. You can’t just go and do things. You have to think about things.’” Rosen said, “I can’t tell you where, when, or how. All I can tell you is George said he’s going to take care of you, Figueroa, and Randolph.”

I told him, “I can’t take this crap anymore. I don’t feel like pitching. Every time I try to get my act together again, something else happens like this where I don’t give a damn again.
