Message 1: Sharon, it's Joshua. Call me back.

The sound of my stepdad's voice made my skin crawl.

Message 2: Helllloooo???

Message 3: I know you're there!

Message 4: Shaaaron!!!

Message 5: You dirty, slut!!!

By the time I got to the sixth message, my jaw was clenched so tight I could've broken a tooth. I didn't even bother listening to the last message. I deleted all of them.

Just then, the phone rang. The caller ID indicated it was my stepdad's cell. I snatched the phone from its cradle.

“What??!” I growled into the receiver.

“Where the fuck is your mom?” His voice slurred. He was drunk, as usual.

“Somewhere trying to live her life without you in it, asshole!” I snapped.

“Listen here, you little bastard--”

I cut him off. “No, you listen, jackass--stop fucking calling here!” I pressed the button to end the call and slammed the phone back into its cradle. I snatched up my book bag. Before I could even leave the room, the phone rang again. I glared at it and gritted my teeth, my heart pounding with anger.

It looked like I was going to have to have a little face-to-face confrontation with Joshua. I was being a little hypocritical after what I'd just said to Ray about not inserting himself in other peoples' issues, but this situation with my stepfather was getting out of hand. I had to do something. Hopefully we could talk and come to some sort of resolution like men. And if that didn't remedy the situation, perhaps a fist-to-face collision would.
