"How do I get myself into these situations?" Jessica asked, scrubbing Maria's hair with a towel in the bathhouse by the pool.
"Am I still purple?" Maria asked cheerfully.
"Yes," Jessica said. "I was hoping I could at least tone it down to a dull lavender. But I can't get out a single drop of the purple. I'll have to check with Marcy and figure out what kind of dye this is. There must be some way to remove it."
"What's all that noise out there?" Maria asked.
"It has gotten a lot louder, hasn't it?" Jessica asked, with a sinking feeling. Lorenzo, Gerry Pat, and Bobby were out there with nobody to watch them. "Maybe if we stay here, it'll stop."
"I don't think so," Maria said, shaking her purple curls.
"Neither do I."
When Jessica and Maria emerged from the bathhouse, Jessica wanted to turn around and run right back in. Lorenzo, Gerry Pat, and Bobby had removed the rope that separated the shallow end of the pool from the deeper end, and had used it to tie four pretty little girls together. Now they were dancing around them, pelting the girls with water balloons.
The girls were crying, the boys were whooping, and Larry the Lifeguard was screaming at all of them.
Jessica's only consolation was that the little girls were part of Lila's group. Lila herself was sitting up in her lounge chair, keeping a wary eye on the water balloons. Her sunglasses were pushed on top of her head and she was halfheartedly trying to reason with Jessica's boys, who ignored her completely.
"Lila's such a fake," Jessica said to Maria, for lack of any other audience. "She couldn't care less about those little girls being tied up. She's only trying to stop the boys because they disturbed her sunbathing!"
Maria looked at her quizzically from under her mop of purple curls. "I still want my eyes dyed purple," she said.
"Get over here right now, Jessica!" Larry called, catching sight of her.
Jessica sighed miserably. The first time she'd seen the tall, dark-haired lifeguard, she'd considered flirting with him. But since the first time she'd brought her Happy Little Monsters to the pool, he'd treated her as if children were contagious. Baby-sitting was definitely putting a crimp in her social life.
Suddenly, Jessica couldn't take another minute of being inconvenienced and humiliated by the children's behavior. And she refused to be shown up in front of Lila again. It was time to show the little bratsâand Lilaâjust who was in charge.
Jessica marched toward the commotion, more angry than she had ever been. Ignoring the threat of water balloons, she walked right up to the boys, grabbed Lorenzo's shoulder, and whirled him around.
"That's it, Lorenzo!" she yelled as loudly as she could. "You're going to untie that rope and let those girls go. And you're going to do it now!
"It's not my fault!" Lorenzo screamed. He pointed at Gerry Pat and Bobby. "They did it, too!"
"But you're the ringleader," Jessica said. "And you're going to be the one who stops this.
