The tenth day of the month of November

Since All Souls, I have dreaded going to the church. As it has been barred to everyone since the entombment of the Lady Agnes, I have not had to face my fear, but tonight is the eve of Martinmas and tomorrow there will be no escaping from it. It seems that Piero da Fiesole is eager for ceremony and show. No one here had expected a song and dance when the tomb was finished – although can a tomb be truly finished before all the bodies it was built for lie therein? – but he is insisting on it and has asked the whole household formally to assemble in the church after dinner tomorrow to see the work unveiled.

Marmion protested that there was enough to do tomorrow without having to go a-marble-gazing and that he was needed to oversee the first day of the slaughter. Why did the imager choose this day of all days for the uncovering when he could have done it at any other time?

Privately, I think there’s a certain rightness to the choice. November is the blood-month and every hog will have his Martinmas, as the saying goes.
