Shamus

‘Who is Shamus?’ West asked me. He had come over to me by now and was right up in my face. As much as I resented his actions, I could hardly blame him. I would have been equally as angry if it had been me who was being screwed around by a good for nothing criminal. For myself, I felt my elation suddenly deflate. Far from being near the end of this mystery, I was actually no further along that I had been before I went to the police, only now I had implicated myself in my wife’s disappearance and the discovery of this skeleton, whoever’s it turned out to be.

‘Shamus O’Malley is a priest from the neighbouring parish,’ I told him. ‘He kind of befriended me when I was feeling low. I don’t know how he came to find me, we just sort of met. He came round here one night and we talked.’

‘I’ve never heard of Shamus O’Malley,’ admitted DS West, and even PC Saville shook his head. He walked away so he could have privacy, although I knew he was calling the station to do a background check on Shamus O’Malley. That was actually something I welcomed. There was something disquieting about the priest, something I hadn’t looked into very deeply, but now that my mind was somewhat clearer I was able to recognise it for what it was. Fear. Pure, undiluted fear. I shivered a little at the thought of O’Malley. He gave me the creeps, especially now that his appearance had taken a downward turn. I was glad that PC Saville would soon be able to unravel that one for me in any case. Maybe things were going to work out in my favour after all.
