In Walthamstow, after three bombs had fallen, two women and two children were killed when they fell into a camouflet²¹⁶ in the garden of a house in Marlowe Road.²¹⁷

29/30 October

There were fatalities in Battersea (at the trench shelters on Wandsworth Common), Bermondsey and Camberwell, and further out at Dagenham, Croydon and Bromley where a shelter was hit at Queens Mead Road. A severe fire was caused at Wray Optical Works in Lewisham by incendiary bombs dropped at 19.40. It was reported that the centre part of the factory was completely gutted, the factory heating system was damaged and the store containing all raw materials for glass work was burnt out. This was an effective strike on a valuable target and production was seriously curtailed.

Home Security reports state a new five-storey block of flats in Stepney was hit at 19.55 – ‘Fortunately most of the tenants were in public shelters and consequently casualties were small.’ According to the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour eight people were killed at Brunswick Buildings in Goulston Street, but this was not a modern block.
