“What’s this about a swim?” Joelle asked suspiciously on their drive back to the apartment they shared just outside of the Texas A&M campus. “Why are you wearing Ford’s clothes? What aren’t you telling me?”

“It’s more about what I’m not telling him,” Shay confessed in a shy voice, hugging her arms around her middle.

“Oh, my gosh! He kissed you, didn’t he?”

“You saw what you saw.” Shay adopted an innocent expression, knowing Joelle had witnessed his mouth grazing her cheek.

“It’s more than that. Something else happened between you, didn’t it? Something big.”

“As a matter of fact?” Shay let her friend suffer a little longer. “Yes,” she finished with a dramatic wave of her hand.

Joelle pounded her steering wheel in excitement. “Tell me everything!”

So Shay did — right down to those hopeless minutes of drifting around in a sea that felt as if it was going to devour her at any second. “He doesn’t do blind dates, but he’s totally into saving lives. And that’s the only reason I’m still alive.”

Joelle jerkily pulled her electric blue Audi into a parking spot outside their apartment. She sat there for several moments, without making any move to leave the car, simply gripping the wheel. Her knuckles glowed white in the starlight. “I’m still trying to process the fact that I almost lost you tonight — for good. You’re going to have to give me a little longer to get back to talking girl talk.”

Shay smothered a laugh, knowing it wouldn’t take long at all.

She was right. “These feelings you have for each other came on pretty quickly,” Joelle burst out only seconds later. “But my gut is telling me you really like him. Not just because he’s nice and good looking and rich, but for reals?”

“I do,” Shay sighed. “I’ll admit it’s mixed with at least a teensy bit of hero worship. I mean, seriously! The guy saved my life.”

Joelle blinked back tears. “I’m not going to sleep tonight, just thinking about what the two of you went through this evening.” She paused a beat, then clapped her hands so suddenly that Shay jumped. “This totally calls for ice cream.”

They skipped laughingly up the stairs to their second-story apartment, where Joelle insisted Shay take a seat on a bar stool. She proceeded to fill two bowls with vanilla bean ice cream and piled on all of the trimmings — spray cool whip, chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, nuts, and sprinkles. She even unearthed a jar of maraschino cherries and plopped one round red orb on top of each of her masterpieces.

Plopping a long-handled spoon into each leaning tower of ice cream, she slid one of the bowls in Shay’s direction. “Okay, time to debrief and analyze, sister.” All too quickly, she zeroed in on the fact that Shay had not gotten around to telling Ford her last name.

Joelle dropped her spoon in her bowl with a jarring clatter. “You have to tell him, Shay. Now. Like call him back tonight.”

Shay’s lips parted in surprise, and she wiggled uncomfortably inside Ford’s cozy hoodie.
