Chapter 14: Sloane
I didn't feel like going out Friday night, but my only other option was to sit at home doing nothing. Doing nothing meant thinking. I didn't want to think. It would only lead to more depression. So, I threw on a hot Gucci dress and some diamond-encrusted Louboutins and then went to watch Jacob sing at some charity event in a posh hotel.
I lingered in the VIP area, bored out of my mind and almost wished Marshal would track me down tonight. He probably wouldn't, since he'd still be upset over Christy. It had been a week since the funeral. I hadn't heard from him since I dropped him off at Christy's parents' house after the funeral. I remembered his dull eyes. The tightness of his lips. The strain on his face. He'd really loved Christy.
He betrayed me because of her.
I didn't want to make any excuses for him, but he'd done what he did only to get money to help Christy. To save her life.
"Hello, gorgeous."
I looked up, and almost did a double take. I hated being approached by guys at clubs and bars, but this guy was cute. Or maybe it was just because with his dark hair and eyes he reminded me of Marshal. He was even wearing a leather jacket similar to Marshal's.
The guy smiled. "Why is a goddess like you all alone?"
"She's not." Jacob appeared from behind the guy and slapped a hand on his shoulder. He was grinning, but the slap looked a little hard. "She's with me."
"Sorry," I told the guy.
The guy gave an exaggerated sigh. "Always the way. The best ones are always taken."
"Yes, she's taken," Jacob said. I noticed he was holding a drink. It was pink and orange. He frowned at the guy until he walked away.
I grinned. "You're kinda possessive." I'd never seen that side of him before. In fact, ever since my drinking the other night, he'd seemed to be going a little cold on me.
Jacob looked at my glass. "What are you drinking?"
"Sparkling water."
"Oh." He set the colorful drink he was holding in front on me. "I bought you a drink."
"What is it?"
"Some kind of mocktail. The bartender said it's a favorite with women. I've told him to keep you topped up while I'm performing. Get as many refills as you want. I've prepaid."
I lifted a brow.
Jacob dropped a kiss onto my forehead. "And don't talk to any strange guys."
I watched him walk away. I looked at the drink. This was just his way of keeping me from drinking alcohol. It was sweet, but slightly offensive. There were better ways he could express his concern. He hadn't even asked me why I'd been drinking.
He's just trying to help. I sighed and took out my cell phone. If I looked busy, hopefully no more guys would approach me.
As I fiddled with my cell phone, my thoughts wandered back to Marshal. I wondered how he was doing. I'd never experienced death so I didn't know how long it would take to get over something like that.
