Chapter Eleven
Linda stepped through the entrance of her parentsâ country home with eight minutes to spare.
âWelcome home, Miss Linda.â Herman, her familyâs longtime butler, greeted her. âYour parents are already in the dining room.â
âThank you, Herman.â She set her purse on the table in the wide entryway and made her way past the grand parlor and the library. She entered the dining room, her eyebrows lifting when she discovered three people sitting inside instead of two. Winston rose at her entrance.
She fought against her irritation, both that Winston was intruding on her time with her family and that he could possibly try to undermine her efforts at work or, worse, cause her father unnecessary stress. âWinston. I wasnât aware you would be joining us tonight.â
âYour mother was kind enough to invite me.â
Of course. Linda moved to her fatherâs side and kissed his cheek. âHave you been resting?â
âYour mother wonât let me do anything else, but I do want to hear about the renovation,â he said. âAre things going well?â
âEverything is right on schedule.â She took her seat.
âNo work talk tonight,â her mother said.
âWe arenât talking about work,â her father countered. âWeâre talking about a project that makes our daughter happy.â
Winston held up his wine glass. âWe were just talking about that building earlier this week.â
Determined to keep Winstonâs and Bruceâs opinions from causing her father more stress, she spoke before Winston could elaborate. âThe school already has a solid list of interested students. As soon as the rezoning is approved, theyâll hold their auditions.â
âWhen is the rezoning going up for vote?â her dad asked.
âNext week.â She smiled. âBy the time you come back to the office in June, most of the renovation will be complete.â
âI really donât think I need to wait that long,â her dad said. âI feel fine.â
âAnd youâll keep feeling fine at home,â her mom said in a firm tone. âYouâre going to follow the doctorâs orders whether you like it or not.â
Her father frowned at his water glass. âI donât like it.â
Linda couldnât help but smile. âWhy doesnât that surprise me?â
Two of the kitchen staff entered with dinner.
After everyone was served, her mother cut into her pheasant. âIâve made a decision.â
Her dad took a bite of his dinner, and for a moment, Linda thought he was going to ignore her motherâs cue that it was his turn to comment in the conversation. After he chewed and swallowed, he asked, âAnd what decision is that, dear?â
âWeâre having a party.â She cut into her pheasant again. âWeâre going to celebrate that your father is still with us.â
Her dad seemed to ponder his wifeâs decision. âWhen exactly are we having this party?â
âJune 8. Weâll make a weekend out of it,â her mom said. âWinston, you must join us.â
Winston gave her a winning smile. âIâd be delighted.â
Linda looked from one parent to the other, finally settling on her mother. âAre you sure you want to take on planning a party while Dad is recovering?â
âIt will be a good distraction for both of us.
