âHey, Jacko, whatâs with all the phone calls to the little woman?â Dave teased.
Jack grinned at Dave. âDonât ever let her hear you call her that. Sheâll deck you.â
Dave chuckled. âYeah, yeah. I know. Bonnie would do the same to me. But hey, on our annual guysâ weekend, anything goes, doesnât it? What we say here stays with just the three of us. Right, Blake?â
Blake unceremoniously dumped his ski boots in the hall and grabbed a soft drink from the fridge before joining his two college buddies. âAbsolutely.â
Jack propped his feet on the coffee table, gazed at the crackling fire and gave a contented sigh. âAh, this is the life.â
âYeah. But only for one long weekend a year,â Dave groused good-naturedly. âThen itâs back to bills and stopped-up toilets and diapers and the nine-to-five routine.â
âYou guys wouldnât change a thing,â Blake said, dropping into one of the condoâs easy chairs.
âThatâs true,â Jack admitted, taking a long swallow of soda. âSo when are you going to get with the program? I thought youâd be the first one married.â
âYeah,â Dave concurred. âYou were the one who wanted to settle down with the Leave-It-To-Beaver wife, raise two-point-five children and have a house with a white picket fence. What happened?â
âIâve got the house,â Blake said.
âSo where are the two-point-five kids?â
âI think I need the wife first.â
âNot these days, you donât.â
âMr. Conventional would,â Jack declared with a grin.
âI didnât see either of you guys deviate from the norm,â Blake pointed out.
âGuilty,â Jack admitted. âSo when are you going to take the plunge? Met anyone interesting lately?â
An image of A.J. flashed through his mind. In fact, sheâd been on his mind a lot during the trip. As heâd maneuvered tricky moguls with expert skill, heâd thought again about her unexplained limp. And he kept picturing her when sheâd been sick, looking so uncharacteristically fragile and helpless.
As the silence lengthened, Dave glanced at Jack and leaned forward with sudden interest. âI think heâs been holding out on us.â
Jack nodded. âYeah. Okay, Blake, spill it. Who is she?â
Blake frowned. âWho?â
âThe woman youâre thinking about right now.â
âWhat makes you think Iâm thinking about a woman?â
Dave chuckled. âBecause weâve been there. We know the look.â
âWhat look?â
âThe I-donât-know-how-this-happened-but-I-think-Iâm-falling-in-love look.â
Blakeâs frown deepened. âYouâre nuts.â
âYeah? Are you going to tell me you werenât thinking about a woman just now?â
âNo. I was. My partner.â
Jackâs eyebrows rose, and he looked at Dave. âHis partner,â he repeated knowingly.
Dave nodded sagely. âSounds logical to me. My wifeâs my partner. How about you, Jack?â
âYeah. Makes perfect sense.â
âCome on, you guys, cut it out. Iâm serious. Sheâs my partner at the bookshop. I thought of her when you asked if Iâd met any interesting women. She certainly falls into that category. But sheâs not my type.â
Jack took a long swallow of his soft drink. âRight.â
âHow old is she?â Dave asked.
âI donât know. Thirtyish, I guess.â
âIs she married?â
âNo.â
âWhatâs her name?â
âA.J.â
âDifferent name. What does it stand for?â
âI donât know.â
âHmm. Is she pretty?â
âYeah.â
âDo you think about her all the time?â
âNo.â Which was true.
