Ididn’t give a damn how mad I was with Mir, no way in hell was he going to this appointment without me. Daria had suggested one of those at home kits, but I didn’t trust her not to tamper with that. So, here we sat waiting in one of those Any Lab Test Now places. Daria was across the waiting room, scowling at us as she rocked her baby. I mugged her right back. Tamir just looked uncomfortable as hell with his guilty ass. I rolled my eyes at him, too, based on pure principle. He pretended to be even more interested in the Cosmo magazine.

I guess Daria couldn’t take it. “I’on even know why we here,” she said.

“The hell you mean, girl?” Tamir asked. “You keep insisting this baby is mine, so we gon see.”

She sighed. “I mean, there’s no need for this. You know this baby is yours, Tamir.”

“I know I never ran up in you raw,” he said. I really didn’t even need to hear all this.

“And you did with her?” Daria clapped back.

“All the time. He wasn’t worried about my health and hygiene,” I responded.

Her face fell. “Bitch!” she hissed.

“We can tear this shit down, if you want,” I said calmly, uncrossing my legs.

Tamir grabbed my arm. “DuBois, stop. You really wanna be a hood rat with her?”

“What I want to know is, if I’m such a hood rat and ho, why you enjoyed laying up with me?” asked Daria.

Now, that was a good question. I looked at Tamir silently, waiting.

“Because I was twenty and stupid and thought being a man was about getting all the pussy you could get. Because I thought you understood the deal. Because I never thought my girl would leave me,” he rattled off.

I frowned. “What? I told you I’d leave if you cheated!”

He shrugged. “But I knew how hard you loved a nigga.”

My jaw dropped. If we hadn’t been in the middle of a public waiting room with his possible other-baby-mama right there, I would’ve done my best to beat his cocky ass. “T’es rien qu’un connard,” I mumbled.

He smirked. “I’m not an asshole. I’m just confident.”

“Did you test her baby?” Daria broke in.

Tamir shrugged again. “You ain’t heard about me killing a nigga, so you know she wasn’t fucking nobody else.”

His ego was really something else. I almost wished I had had more experiences. But Tamir had been it for me, since the moment I saw him. Sure, I found other men attractive, but I didn’t crave any of their touches. This smug bastard knew that and there was nothing I could say. Instead, I turned to Daria.

“Keep your mouth off my daughter,” I warned her.

“Or what, Ms. Africa?” she challenged.

I smirked. The last thing in the world that insulted me was any mention of my heritage. I dug back at her. “Same old thing, yeah, you know that shit's boring. American, you mad he copped this foreign?” I asked her, paraphrasing Trey Songz. I laughed as she turned red.
