Commentary

ANCIENT CHINESE TEXTS are often difficult to understand, even for an educated Chinese reader. All classics were therefore accompanied by commentaries, which were relied on to elucidate difficult passages or establish authoritative interpretation. In keeping with that tradition, this commentary provides information we feel may be helpful in working with the Sun Tzu. Like our predecessors, we supply background materials from Chinese language and history. We also identify important terms on their first appearance. However, we stop short of providing final meanings. Instead we trust that as each key word or theme recurs, its meaning will clarify and deepen, as when discovering new facets of an intricately cut gem. In the same spirit, while we bring out patterns of thought essential to the text, we leave open how this wisdom might apply in any individual situation. Throughout we assume that the perspective of victory through taking whole underlies all passages of the text.
