Alice and I sat in comfortable silence and digested what she had read aloud from Willow’s journal.

Al was the first to speak. “His friend died in the mud. How can there be so much mud that they couldn’t even find his body?”

I nodded. “That’s incredible. And so sad. I’m starting to understand why Kirby is so set on rushing her into this marriage. He knows better than anyone how precious time is, and he doesn’t want to waste a minute.”

“Yes. Kirby must have seen some terrible things during the war, so he wants to focus now on building his happy life with Willow. It’s sweet and romantic, but I can relate to Willow. She wants to be independent and make her own choices.”

“I’m just hoping she chooses Kirby. If we get to the end of this diary, and she reveals she decided to marry that George dude...” I shook my head in disgust.

We were so invested in Kirby and Willow’s story. It’s like we knew them.

A knock on the door startled us. “I’ll get it.”

I found Maxwell, Millie, and Ivy at the front door. I hugged Millie and Ivy, and Maxwell slapped me on the back as I invited them in.

Ivy immediately rushed to hold one of the cats, and Millie and Alice greeted each other like old friends. Millie paused in her chatter long enough to introduce her husband, and then the women disappeared into the kitchen together.

Maxwell rubbed his chin and eyed me, and I didn’t have to be psychic to know what was coming.

“So what the fuck is going on with you, numbnuts?”

I snorted. “Charming as always, Maxwell.”

“Millie told me you are still pretending to be poor.” The expression on his face let me know what he thought about that.

I shrugged.

“You need to tell her the truth. Then tell her you are in love with her, get married, and get her pregnant. Stop dicking around.”

We went to stand out on the porch and watch the rainfall. It wasn’t as violent as storm as it was earlier. Maybe the worst was over.

“What is this? I expected you to say you weren’t in love, and there was no way in hell you were planning on getting married.” Maxwell was still watching me closely.

I leaned against the porch railing and considered him. “You are the fucking mind reader. You tell me what’s up.”

He looked me up and down once more. “You are in love, you do want to get married, and you wouldn’t mind a baby.” Maxwell snorted with glee. “The world must be ending.”

He made a big show of peering at the sky.

“What are you doing?” I frowned at his antics.

“Looking for the meteor that’s about to destroy the planet. It’s the only explanation for your sudden change of heart.”

I groaned and threw my head back. “I’m so screwed. Alice doesn’t want a commitment. She doesn’t even want to live in the same place. She lives in an RV, for crying out loud.”

Maxwell chuckled. “She wants a commitment. She’s just scared.
