Chapter Fourteen

“I do not know what he is doing, Symington.”

Lord Symington shrugged. “Might he be truthful?”

Instantly, Peter shook his head. “No, I do not think so. I know my brother and I confess that I am afraid that what he is doing at present has another motive.”

“You mean to say that he is not in the least bit apologetic? That he has no intention of changing his ways?”

Peter nodded. “Precisely that.”

“But why would he do such a thing? What purpose would there be in it?”

Biting the edge of his lip, Peter shook his head and then did not answer for some moments. There was something about his brother’s behavior both towards Miss Jennings and to himself that did not sit well with him. “When I finished my argument with my brother the day before the ball – the day that Miss Jennings came to speak with me about what he had done and said in approaching her in the park – he was so angry with me, he roared that he wished I would simply forget I even had a brother so that I would not bother him any more. To go from that to a gentleman who is willing not only to apologise but to appease is not at all what I expected of him.”

“I see.”

Peter’s lips twisted as Lord Symington and he walked through the park together. “I am determined to keep the truth about Lord Ellon from his ears. I fear that, should he learn that Miss Jennings has asked to keep her engagement from her father, he might do the very opposite of what she desires.”

Lord Symington nodded, having heard about this from Julia. “That is wise, at least.” His head tilted. “What about Miss Jennings’ mother? Where is she?”

“I – ” Peter frowned, his words cut short. “I am afraid I do not know. I recall Lady Mayhew saying something about her but I do not quite remember. What I do remember is that she is not, at present, living at the Ellon estate but elsewhere. Lady Mayhew said something about Lord Ellon being something of a dislikeable fellow and I do wonder what effect his nature has had upon his wife.”

Lord Symington sighed and shook his head. “It is an evil gentleman who treats his wife and daughters with any sort of cruelty.”

“Indeed,” Peter murmured, a sharp sympathy stabbing through his heart. “I do wonder if Lady Mayhew would wish to invite her to the wedding, however?”

“You could but ask. In fact, I think it would show Miss Jennings that you care not only about her but also about her family if you were to ask her about her mother.”

Peter mused on this for a few moments, then nodded. “Yes, I think that would be a wise idea.”

“Then you admit it?” Lord Symington’s voice was light. “You do care for Miss Jennings?”

Coming to an immediate stop, Peter stared at his friend, then snorted, rolled his eyes and continued on his way. “I am concerned for her, if that is what you mean.
